Reports on BBC News 24 that a US Marshal has fired a shot on a plane in Miami after a passenger claimed to have a bomb on board. More news to come.

Blatantly not a terrorist, as they would have waited until the plane lifted off.

Vankleek Hill, actually....
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A person was shot and wounded on the Jetway to an American Airlines passenger jet that was at the terminal at Miami International Airport, an airline official said.

A federal official told CNN that the passenger was shot by a federal air marshal, who felt the passenger was acting in a threatening manner. A senior administration official added that the passenger claimed to have a bomb in his carry-on luggage.

An air marshal told the passenger to stop, and he did not, the official said, adding that the marshal fired after the passenger reached into his carry-on bag.

The weapon was fired on the Jetway to Flight 924, which was on a stopover in Miami during a flight from Medellin, Colombia, to Orlando, Florida, police said.

The Boeing 757, which can hold about 180 passengers, was due to take off for Orlando at 2:18 p.m. ET.

Footage from the scene showed police cars and what appeared to be SWAT vehicles surrounding the plane. Several officers wielding rifles were running toward and around the plane.

One of the easiest ways to commit suicide I'd say.

What do you expect. the guy says guess what i have a bomb, then refuses to stop when ask to. To further make it worse then reaches in to his back pack.

I would have shot him as well.

tragic overreaction maybe?

Yeah i am really sure that crossed the marshalls mind.

" Here mate...you look suspicious, whatcha got"
" I got a bomb"
" Ok...step away from the bag"
" No I am going to bend down and put my hand in...."

BANG

That bang could have been an airliner with 180 people on it who are all now dead, or one bloke ....mmmmmm difficult choice

I wouldn't want anyone to take a chance if someone said they had a bomb.

Very difficult. If he was mentally unstable and had not taken his medicine then he should not have bee nallowed to fly. Questions must be asked of his wife and the airline.

The US Marshal, was left with little or no choice.

Sad for all concerned. Pity there was no non-lethal option available, considering he was no longer on the plane. A swift bean bag to the head, or a rubber bullet to get him to drop the bag would have kept him alive, prevented the Marshal from having shot someone, and stopped his wife from failing to prevent her husband from being killed.

Only non-lethal methods that i can think off is a taser or pepper spray, the latter not being particularly effective and the former has a nasty habit of setting of electricaly initated devices which means most explosive devices ...

I think the question of the guys medication needs looking at, why didn't he take, why did his wife let travel etc ..
As is normal in these cases ... no winners but lots of losers ...

A bit off topic, (as in not about shooting.) Has anyone flown into the states lately?
Their airport security, immigration etc are the most over officious, incompetent, aggresssive twats you could ever wish to meet.
I hate flying into the U.S of A.
Last time I was going into Minneapolis on my way to Seattle.
There was a young couple with 2 toddlers in a push chair in front of me going through security & this goon says to a 2 year old. "I'm gonna have to ask you to take your shoes off sir." A f***ing 2 YEAR OLD!!!!

So terrorists cannot hide bombs or other items in the shoes of a 2 year old? I agree a bit over the top though.

Yes it's very over the top, especially so as we were just getting OFF a flight from London.
