Well the rain has literally pissed on the sport today.

I was wracking my brain - has rain ever been bad enough to stop a top league football, mid game? Obviously snow does, and I think heavy rain has knocked out generators and consequently floodlights, but has the actual rain made playing the game so difficult it has been abandoned half way through?

You never heard of the phrase 'abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch'

Although for the rain to stop the actual ball would almost defy the law of physics.

There's some material for you there. Just sit me near the front and give me the nod

We were getting tonked at Swindon some years ago and the ref called it off just after halftime. If memory is good I think it was 4 - 0 and at half time the copper said dont worry the ref is coming back out for the 2nd half and calling it off. Still lost the re-arranged game but I think we had got promotion by then.

I was at that game and laughed all the way back to Brighton. It was a sleety kind of rain?

So HB&B there's been loads, but you're helpfully not naming them?

It happened twice for us at Halifax in one season, though he did say "top league".

Recentish (i.e. last 10-15 years)??

If so I don't think they were. We had two game called off against them but both were before kick off. The midweek game was very close to kick off though (less than a hour if memory recalls).

The Saturday that was called off had had rugby league played on the pitch the evening before.

The only game I've ever been at that has been called off was between a club with some hooligans, down on the south coast, against York City :dunce:

The Copa del rey final between Depor and Valencia was rained off in about the 80th minute with the scores at 1-1. They then re-started the game 3 days later from the same point in the game. Depor scored and in 10 minutes the whole thing was over.

This happened in Japan's J2 yesterday.

The game starts at 1.00. The fact the ref started the game with the pitch in that state is just incredible.

(No TSUNAMI jokes, please. )

I remember that Halifax farce. I went past the ground 6 hours before they called the midweek one off and they were actually watering the grass despite the fact it has chucked it down the night before.

There was a midweek evening game against cardiff at the Goldstone around 1994????? which never started because of the deluge that dropped on the pitch about half an hour before kick off.

They made plenty of effort to get the water off the pitch but didn't call the game off untl about 9.30
