9 down today "Weep on stand, hugging dad - fantastic football team" 7,6.

Just so that everyone is clear on this, the word fantastic here relates to the last three letters of the answer being ACE, and certainly not to mean that the team that happens to be the answer are in any way at all fantastic!

Typically challenging stuff from The Torygraph compilers... always thought their crosswords weren't very good and this confirms it.

For a bit of balance, here's the Guardian prize crossword (by Paul, a STH at the Amex) from 6 August 2011 - that date rings a bell for some reason...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/crosswords/prize/25394

Selected clues:

16,7 High above London, Britain hasn't one ugly side (8,3,4,6)

8,25 Workman learns about old footballer (4,9)

Blimey, how did I miss that? Must have had other things on my mind that day.

Mind you, there'll be a lot of Brighton fans not particularly happy with the second one

I hate/can't do critic crosswords.
Even when I know the answer, I still can't do it!

My thought, too. I'm always looking out for Paul clues to do with the Albion.

Might have been on holiday, as it was in August. That could by your excuse too, Gwylan.

Good spot, Sussex on Leith.

Holiday, that'll be it. Perhaps I'll start some sort of "where were you on 6 August 2011" thread to see what everybody was up to that day... :amex:

Guardian crossword blog has a good running feature on understanding the cryptic clues/conventions.

Not for everyone I accept, but can be great fun if you do get into it. Entire train journeys from Edinburgh to London have seemed to pass in minutes while staring (usually blankly) at the Guardian cryptic. (It probably helps that I'm still not very good - I think I've finished it about twice in my life.)

The Telegraph cryptic exists to help old Tories think that they're clever.

Cheers, TBH I'll keep with the ignorance, and carry on watching The Fall Guy

The clue in the Torygraph clearly outs the setter as a Palace fan.

This is great news for woolly-minded liberals like me. Guardian setter Paul being loyal Albion confirms I've got my politics right - and all those loony right-wingers (and even the moderate ones) on NSC are wrong. Hah!

Somebody on here must be able to come up with a better cryptic clue to give the answer in the original post?

Nasty case of rectal clap say? Disease-ridden slum dwellers whose preferred thing to eat is a dead cat. (7,6)
