I'm due shortly to get a broadband connection and wondered whether the Connection Firewall (ICF) that comes with Windows XP is sufficent security?

Can anyone qualify this as i don't want to waste money on an additional McAfee/or Norton product? Obviously i will be using anti virus software.

Thanks for any advice

it is, but in line with most of microsoft's security measures it's very restrictive.

If you're concerned, get a router with a firewall built in which you can configure or simply use a software firewall like Zonealarm, it's sufficient for most home users.

agreed. i've got zone alarm having de-installed norton firewall cos it was a pain.

proof of the pudding: run a symantec security check (go to symantec.com and run free security check).

Zone Alarm and Microsoft XP are not guaranteed to be compatible.

A bit like many of your contributions to this board and the widely held opinions of the club's directors and supporters! :dunce:

Microsoft are just about to ship a new service pack (Service pack 2) of XP that will have a new firewall that will surpass ZoneAlarm.

And then, 4 weeks later, and after much adverse publicity, they'll ship the Service Pack that prevents people hijacking your computer using the loopholes introduced by the new firewall software!!! :jester:

Hooray for Bill!

if you havn't been paying attention, its mainly because of Bill and his shite software that we have these problems in the first place. I wouldnt trust an Microsoft Firewall or any other security system for a second.

Best advise is Barnet's: get a router with built in firewall/NAT.

Go to www.cnet .com and look for downloads (top of page)click, then in the search box type firewall and you get a list of all the free firewalls out there.
BG is the problem but I guess with so many hackers out there just dying to proove how useless BGs software is ,the problem will just go on & on.
OBTW IE is a big security problem so why not use Mozzila as your browser, thats safer for now.At least untill it gets popular enough to grab the hackers attention.
Mozilla is at

Then you probably deserve to get your computer hosed for illegally pirating software.

Fair play.

What I was getting at was that you'd best make sure you've got a properly licensed version, there are more than a few dodgy versions out there

another cute piece of software for you.If you know your system is clean then get winpatrol.
Free from cnet and once installed it will notify you if any files get added with the dreaded .exe to your system.Go on try it and be safe
