Yup. The relation between poverty, crime & violence is well documented.

Not sure about this club in particular but a lot of South American fans have nothing but their football club and are going to take the "game" quite seriously.

Match fixing is quite common everywhere except for England. If something goes wrong - maybe you could only afford to bribe one of your players but the opponents are very shit - you can always get the money back by interrupting the game. Wouldnt be surprised if something like that was the cause.
