Taxi drivers

Spun Cuppa

Thanks Greens :(
Saved me starting a new thread. Why do they drive round at night with just sidelights on? I would have thought they would use dip beam to make themselves more visible in an urban environment while doing high mileages? Or is it the legendary tightness of cabbies in that they don't like replacing burnt out headlight bulbs? Also, do taxis have the indicator stalks removed at the factory ???

I believe there are some cabbies on here, so without wanting to unduly upset them, nor any London black cab drivers who may have strayed here, this thread is not long enough to do justice to the "quality" of your very average cabbie.

Outside Brighton station, any day you like, just blocking the whole road up to get on the rank. Couldn't give a shit about the rest of the traffic.
In Yeovil Wednesday morning, Thick twat cabbie swearing out the window at a passing car, while he is parked on double yellows and the other driver is trying to get past.

FFS don't get me started.

I would rather walk, and often do, rather than get a cab.
Professional drivers? don't make me fcuking laugh.
They didn't name it a TAXI RANK by accident you know.

Ever since a Shoreham mini-cab reversed into my car at the Mill Road P&R on boxing day a few years ago my liking of them has gone down.

He reversed into the side of my car (while I was in a queue to leave the P&R) and didn't hear my horn or see my car right behind him. He was the only one in the car - got his insurance details... When I phoned him up, he said I drove into him, and the passenger in his taxi is his witness :wanker:. Honesty eh?

I have to give a little defence to the taxi service in Brighton and Hove. It is THE BEST outside of London without doubt. It may be expensive but the coverage is brilliant. I have arrived in Coventry for a business exhibition and got in a cab to take me to Stoneleigh Park. After having taken the drivers card I rang the company at around 4.30pm to arrange a return journey, only to be told 'Sorry, we don't go out that far from the centre'! IT was only 5 miles away FFS! In Gloucestershire you have to book a cab around 4 hours in advance on a Saturday night!

How were you supposed to have done that?

Knobbers! Got in to Brighton station at 6.50 tonight in plenty of time for the 7 o'clock bus home, but no, it didn't get through until 7.20 because of the cabbie protest. FFS, the work on the station forecourt needs doing. Yes, it's unfortunate, but why not use the back of the station for a while until it gets done? Might even increase the fare.......

Is that it?
FFS go and use the other ranks and after a fare drive past the station, there are bound to be people waving at you, friendly pedestrians saying hello, they just might want a cab.

Then again i was a Brighton Cabbie once, f*** driving all the way to St. Peters or East Street, just park up where you can lads. :wozza:

I believe their main gripe is that some of them recently paid the full fee for using the station rank, without being told it was soon to be closed for months, and they'd have to use the totally inadequate space at the back.

Does sound as if they may have been stitched up.

My brother's a cabbie. He works over 60 hours a week. He often goes out of an evening and after petrol and whatnot earns less than minimum wage. You couldn't meet a lovelier, friendlier bloke.

Saturday nights he regularly deals with piss heads who think nothing of spunking £30 on a round yet begrudge a less than £10 fare (set by the council not him) at 3.30 on a Saturday morning after they've had a big night and he's been working since 7 that evening.

You wouldn't believe the red tape that he gets tied up in, all the extra costs of being a cabbie - the insurances, the taxes, the road tests, the licences, the police checks. He's got a wife and 3 kids to support and has never ever moaned about his lot despite working a lot harder than most on here and earning a lot less than most.

All these blokes are trying to do is earn a living. It's not as if they do this protest every day so how about you try and see it from their perspective before shooting your mouths off.

*gets off soapbox*

They had my sympathy on this issue before they held me up this evening. Not any more.

Highway Code Rule 113

You MUST

* ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise
* use headlights at night, EXCEPT on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
* use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226)

Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise).

[Laws RVLR regs 3, 24, & 25, (In Scotland - RTRA 1984 sect 82 (as amended by NRSWA, para 59 of sched 8))]

Not a taxi driver - just a pedant

What they have to pay a fee now? To use the Station?
I once waited for an hour to get to the front of the rank there, a guy came up to me and said through the window "Three Jolly Butchers, please mate" I replied " Go to the 2nd set of lights, turn left and its on your left" He never realised it was so close and was thankful i didnt take him. In those days it was about £1-40 on the meter when you get in i doubt it would even turm over by the 3 jolly butchers, £1-40 for an hours work, and now they have to pay for the privelage?
Nah id tell em to keep it and use St. Peters, they would soon drop the charges when their customers cant get a cab from the station.

Still not right to f*** everybody elses day up with a protest, Withdraw labour if you want to make a point. The Police would be a powerful allie when they cant get West Street clear of piss-heads on a Friday or Saturday night.

Yes and the powers that be sold something like 20 times as many licences as there are spots for taxis to park up. The taxi drivers have tried to push for an extra rank at the back but the coaches take up all the spaces.
