As a boy growing up in the 60's and 70's my mum used to take us down to the 'Brighton bathing beach' every day during the summer holidays. I remember my feet being caked in tar every time and a man sitting at the entrance of the loo near the pier with a bowl of white spirit and he used to get the tar off peoples feet and there was always a queue of people. Does anyone else remember this?

It was the norm in those days, you never left the beach without a lump of tar on your clothes or towel. Dradfull in 1967 after the Toorey Canyon disaster and the Sitikund that exploded off Beachy Head
