Taking Corners

without elliott bennett taking them and murray getting on the end of them we're not going to be as effective with our corners.

although i do think over the last few matches we have been improving.

people just seem to get frustrated, rightfully so, when we take a short corner and a chance doesnt emerge so bruno ends of playing it back to the defence. but you can bet this is because of strict instruction from gus to keep possesion rather than just put in a hopeful cross.

i guess until we sign a target man corners will always be like this.

Hammond has been playing further back. I think that's the main reason. He has an excellent penalty record as well. We have the options.

Is that a treason to stop him going forward for corners like El Abd and Greer the difference being he ay win some and as regards penalties I would put him on the spot as he is very good or was for us and Southampton of Lambert wasn't on the pitch to take them. If I remember correctly Gus mentioned that he was signing a 'specialist' set ball taker some time ago. Are we still waiting?

For some it is a treason!

I love that Experimental361 site - fascinating stuff.

What would we prefer:
1. Every corner lofted deep into the box and, if nothing comes of it, we could say "Well, at least we put it in there", or
2. Experimentation with short stuff, a high proportion of which will end in either a goal kick or the ball never reaching the box

If we believe the research, then 1 is only good once in a blue moon, but it would give us some hope of a freak headed goal every time, and 2 may be a more intelligent, creative approach, but we're going to have to bear with it - it's going to be more frustrating when it doesn't work.

I think I agree that corners are over-rated and that trying something different increases the chance of getting something out of it, but it has the unfortunate side effect of looking terrible when it comes to nothing. I'm going to try to be more patient when we have a corner - we have no "big lad up front".

We could have Beckham taking the corners and we still wouldn't be any better off. Until we have someone who can win headers AND score the only real option is to play it short.

Short corners are definitely the way to go given our current lack of aerial threat.

I'd like to see balls hit with pace and swing that our nippier players can get a touch on. There's also always the chance a defender will deflect it in. Kaz can hit a powerful ball in - hope he gets the chance to on Saturday.

At Charlton we had too many crosses and corners high and floaty, which made it easy for the keeper to gather it.
