5 door 2001 Rover 45 1.6 Twin-cam 16v
37,000
Air con, PAS, electric windows, CD, alarm / immobiliser, FSH etc
Immaculate condition
£1995

So I BOUGHT it.
Yes, I was tempted by the Audi A4 2.4 litre for a few grand more, but the government would routinely RAPE me in road tax and at the petrol pump even more if I'd bought that bad boy. There was also a rather peachy Alfa that caught my eye, but bollocks to it. I only need the thing to ferry me to HH and back through the week, so the price, low milage and excellent condition of this old Rover won me over. Plus the fact I didn't need to take out any finance with them. It'll do me for a couple of years till things hopefully get a bit more sensible again.

Yes, I own a Rover. And yes, it'll f***ing do.

Hardly thirsty, should get 35mpg easy.
I'm not tootling up there in a Ford Ka or a bloody micra. You've got to draw the line somewhere.

Yes yes I KNEW I'd attract instant derision for having an unfashionable cheap used car. But stuff it. It probably means we can also squeeze another holiday abroad later this year, so with all things considered, I'm happy to take the cheapo car option for now. Once the kids are older, THEN I can start getting silly and start buying ridiculous cars I'm far too old for.

Thin edge of the mid-life-crisis wedge tho innit. Next it'll be the Harley Davison and the leather jacket and bombing off to Goa to 'find yourself' i.e find yourself a spaced-out nineteen year old hippy chick called Moonbeam

I hardly think a Rover 45 is the thin-end to a mid-life crisis. Its a BORING car that will do a job. Its the automobile equivalent of Gareth Southgate.

I intend to LAUNCH my midlife crisis in 2012 with the purchase of a two-seater 2003 TVR with bucket seats and a rear speaker system the size of Wiltshire.

Right here, right now
I think you have a bargain there - you just have to hope nothing too serious goes wrong with it as I hear parts are a bastard to get on some models. However, the low mileage and FSH should give you a fighting chance.

I had to get rid of my luxurious Omega 2.0 auto because of the rising cost of fuel. I've now got a Fiesta 1.25 Zetec (S reg) and I easily get 45mpg. OK its not the most exciting car in the world, but it does what I need it to, which is get me to and from HH every day cheaply and comfortably!
