Yes, it wouldn’t surprise me, insane people often use extremist ideologies as a vehicle to rationalise their motivation for mass killing. That’s why Trump and other politicians who dog whistle to extremist causes are so dangerous- there’s always a nutter somewhere who will be triggered by it, even if they have no prior engagement with the issues.
The police have said that it is not terrorism or ideologically related. But the person was known to them.

Bondi stabbing was likely 'not a terrorism' attack, say police

Commissioner Webb is now going into the details that police know about the offender and say he was a 40-year-old man who was known to police.
"We know a little bit about this person but are waiting to confirm his identification," she says.
She adds that police do not have fears that he was "holding an ideation - in other words it is not a terrorism incident. He is known to law enforcement," she adds.
"Let me assure you that we are confident that there is no ongoing risk and we are dealing with one person who is now deceased," Commissioner Webb says.

Yes, it wouldn’t surprise me, insane people often use extremist ideologies as a vehicle to rationalise their motivation for mass killing. That’s why Trump and other politicians who dog whistle to extremist causes are so dangerous- there’s always a nutter with severe mental illness somewhere who will be triggered by it, even if they have no prior engagement with the issues.

Reminds me of an incident my Sister had in the supermarket a few weeks back - a rather large imposing man started screaming behind her that he was going to kill her because she was staring at him (she wasn’t). He was clearly very agitated and started muttering non stop to himself - my Sister left in a real hurry, she was terrified. Staff said they knew him and it worse the worse they had seen them. Why are these people not properly medicated/managed but wandering around our communities like a time bomb? 😡
So, every single Hamas, Hezbollah & Isis member are "insane people using extremist ideologies as a vehicle to rationalise their motivation for mass killing"?
Do you not think there might be another answer?

I just responding to @aolstudios and saying it would not have surprised me if he had made some reference to a terrorist group because people with severe MH problems can and do get triggered by that. So saying exactly that, it was a MH issue rather than a terrorist - the example of potentially violent behaviour caused by MH problems in the encounter my sister had - ie a guy threatened to kill her because he said she was staring at him - she wasn’t, his thought process was completely irrational - the ‘staring’ was how his brain processed the drive to be violent but it could be any reason - people with severe mental health problems can get triggered by violent rhetoric (such as Trump has used ) and use ‘terrorism’ as a vehicle without subscribing to any of it’s ideology or even understanding what it entails simply because they are wired to commit extreme violence - the policing and Mental Health service are not oblivious to this fact.

Back to @Harry Wilson's tackle question, what makes an apparently ‘sane’ person ‘insane’? - something has triggered them:

A police said that it's not terrorism related
I was just quoting a report I had read…thanks for correcting it…and it was just one small bit of my post …

let’s not get sidetracked …at end of day this is a tragic event where several people have been murdered or injured ..lost loved ones ….horrific!

Debate or whatever …needs to be left for another day when all the facts are known

How on earth do you get to that conclusion of what I was meaning by my post - No that is NOT what I said, please try and understand- you said ‘he was globalising intifada’ - In response I suggested rather than him being a terrorist it would not surprise me if he was simply a person with serious MH problems that had been triggered to carry out a violent attack on multiple victims because of something (even subliminally) he had heard or read - (all that was in specific response to you saying he was ‘globalising intifada’) he does not need even to be conscious of any rationale for the attack. A person with schizophrenia triggered by the violent rhetoric (with no engagement in the issues) therefore, is not the same nor anything like the same as a politicised person who has been radicalised and carries out an attack for political purposes because he subscribes to a particular ideology (although I suspect there is a close relationship between the two)

(What basis or why, do you say he was ‘globalising intifada’ anyway - there’s been nothing like that in the news ?)

As Eyeore says, this just sounds like a case of severe MH illness rather than anything else.

Just tragic all round.

Not sure speculation of any kind is particularly helpful. There’ll doubtless be more info when we in the UK wake up, given the time difference.

Whoever did it and why, the outcome doesn’t change. And as for the officer who took him down - massive bravery. Hero. 🫡

No point in reasoning with @aolstudios as they've demonstrated constant racism against Muslims often in the Hamas/Israel thread.

Never says anything in good faith, only to push their view forward.

I guess the key question is why was he known to the police?
Why is that a key question? What are you suggesting?

Probably several million people 'known to the police' in this country. Either on the Police National Computer (PNC) and/or the DNA database.

If you got arrested for Drunk & Disorderly 20 years ago, you are 'known to police'.

There are other, equally uninformed, comments that the assailant was an Israeli. Perhaps take your one eyed, slanted, racist views and shut the fxxk up?
I assumed that @aolstudios was being ironic, anticipating a pile on (that may well never come, if the perpetrator isn't muslimy, but there is always next time).

I always thought @aolstudios was one of the good guys.

Thread's curdled. Fancy that. Who knew?

Latest update is that police believe that no political or religous ideaology was the motivation for this attack. That may change in time, probably not. Perhaps those pointing fingers should now refrain, at least until more info becomes available..
You’ll see Guinness Boy has posted covering the “finger pointing bit” already …calling for calm and no finger pointing at each other either….be great if that could be adhered to out of respect to those who have lost their lives
