I was just digging out some rubbish looking for a Sussex book and found my old Umer Rashid memorial cap. I had forgotten all about him.

I really liked Umer, thought he was underrated. I specifically remember watching him getting the winning runs in the game in 99 (i think?) when we chased down a mammoth total win against Gloucstershire. Such a tragic way to die.

He was very much yet to reach his prime and I thought he was going to be a massive player for us. I remember his brother playing in the memorial match for Umer and Burnham. Heading out to the crease, there was not a dry eye at Hove. It can't have been long after Ben Hollioake was killed.

I was on a hockey tour in Spain at the time and found out in one of the British papers. It really hit me for six.
