Anyone wondered how the police were able to state the fans who rushed the turnstiles didn’t have tickets?

To be fair that's a fairly logical assumption to make. You're clutching at straws with that one.

The police really don’t help themselves do they?

I remember the dark days of the 70s and 80s. What I saw some police do in those years made me form a negative view of them which I’ve never been able to completely shake off.

When you see stuff like this, it really makes me wonder if they have changed at all.....

Didn't the police of the 70s and beyond have allegiances to any clubs? They either didn't care about football so couldn't give a monkey's nuts about the fans...or they did enjoy football but just became power-mad thugs in uniform. Pleas,e it would be interesting to know as someone who wasn't around in those years. No sympathy for the fans, and it's starting to become more apparent again in police-supporter relations.

Especially as they were apparently all fully engaged elsewhere at the time dealing with more pressing matters. Like kettling docile bobble-hatted ticket holders.

Yeah, The police are either liars or incompetent fantasists. I'm not sure which is worse.

Yes. And at no time did I say I was merry and full of Christmas cheer about this. In fact - is there a third option, even? No, I don't think there is. The annoying thing is the OB will breeze through all this with absolutely no come back. And the club can't change anything. We either let Palace have their FA cup allocation or what? Unilaterally ban them (unthinkable and probably a reason for the FA to throw us out)? Or demand the police do their job properly (I thought there weas a general expectation that folk employed from the public purse do, shall and must do their job properly)?

I'm beginning to think that whoever said 'it was just a small bit of colour and sound, and a bit of handbags outside' may have actually reflected the real wider view of the OB and the PL, while the rest of us who have been huffing and puffing about it are living in some sort of comfy middle class alternative universe.

They were just a third warring party in those days. Two sets of fans who wanted to break the law, a third group on great overtime rates who had an opportunity to 'have a bit' whilst secure in the knowledge that their mates would 'back them up'. Plod only ever lost out when the two sets of fans combined against them, and that was very rare! Must have been good fun to be on the third team I guess.

Police lie about football fans shock

I appreciate that's a joke, but it should be a shock, particularly when there was no need to lie because what we all saw and what there was video evidence of as well was already quite appalling.

The police panicked, and this was a way to justify the heavy handed policing.( and I'm not excusing the HF for any shenanigans)

The heavy handed policing was more as a result of the mysterious hooded ninja-ultras scaring old ladies and mums around Brighton town centre from around lunch-time. To be joined by fat bald sarf-London blokes parading around throughout the afternoon and taking-over the Spoons on West Street to await their customary police escort. As I've said before if Palace want to have a better Brighton away experience then don't behave like 12 year-old bell-ends.

So it was an assumption that was reported as a fact?

Does it matter? Why would anyone who had a ticket storm the gate? It's hardly in the same league as saying you had weapons as evidence and then trying to claim that the Albion had them before finally admitting that you completely made it up.

Its both embarrassing and damaging. Both clubs must be pissed off and rightly so.
Don't forget that this fake news probably went around the world and damaged the rep of the clubs and English football in general.

I suppose that paper cup thrown on the pitch the other day was made up as well was it ?

Well I saw it with my own eyes and am still coming to terms with it.

Maybe because the game had started ? A gate opens, the first thing you want to do is get to your seat (or someone elses, if you're in a black hoody).

Maybe. I can't get too excited about this though.

Is there a single party that came out of this game with any credit whatsoever? Even I was in trouble with the wife when I got home.

Maybe not to you but I prefer the police to not make assumptions in any press release, big or small.

Reporting that it was ticketless fans storming the turnstiles justifies their behaviour and conveniently draws attention away from the point that their earlier actions might possibly have contributed to the subsequent scenes.

I’ll leave it there because it sounds like I’m trying to justify the fans rushing the door, which I’m not.

That's actually a fair comment. It was probably ticketless fans, but frankly if Sussex Police have said the fans were 'ticketless' I'm not now 100% certain that they were. As you say, there's no justification for their behaviour of course, but the seeds of doubt have now been sown.

"I personally add to this apology - the information regarding discarded weapons and pyros in the away end of the stadium was passed to us and believed to be true - this was clearly not the case."

Sorry, so someone passed you this information and you reported it to the press, without checking, and even as recently as Tuesday claimed you had recovered weapons, and that they were now evidence? But you didn't know this wasn't true then?

You are a ****ing liar, Mr Nelson. Either that or utterly incompetent. I'm not sure which is worse.
