Sussex Country Pubs

I've played there, but generally went to the pub on the crossroads. I can't remember its name.

The Highlands Inn ? Heading back into town

I'll nominate two. The Cricketers, Berwick and The New Inn, Hadlow Down.

Been past the New Inn countless times but never ventured in

Classic old fashioned country pub with unspoilt interior. When I used to go there regularly the only grub available was the jars of cheese biscuits and pickled eggs on the counter!

I can nominate one.
The Imperial at Broadfield.Not strictly a country pub,but very much on the edge of town.
A pub full of character,and full of characters.
Superb and underestimated 'door stop' sarnies too.

it's a fantastic place to buy drugs and "preowned" electrical equipment.

You might be muddling the Anchor up with the Anglers Rest at Barcombe Mills which,sadly, did close many years ago.
I haven't been to The Anchor for many years. It has had a bad press in some other forums, but whether or not that's justified I can't say.

The Anchor is a great spot, but like many pubs in fantastic locations, doesn't have to try too hard and lets itself down as a result. The food (and drinks) are overpriced and the landlord an A1 **sser. Just my view.

Thanks for sharing your photos and blog BL, it is a great short walk and one I do regularly. Nearly always see buzzards on the look out for rabbits and often kestrels too. I prefer to do it from Lewes to Glynde as the walk down from Caborn to the village is perfect, with a pint of Harvey's with my name on it waiting at the Trevor Arms.

I used to love the Cricketers but have been told it's got a little pricier and much more limited in the menu recently.

The new garden part and menu at the Half Moon in Plumpton is very nice

Shepherd and Dog in Fulking is a particular favourite of mine. Infact we enjoyed a nice lunch there today.

Visiting for the first time right now. What a great spot - good beers and cider, lovely garden, external WiFi and the food looks great. Trying to resist sampling it as we had lunch out earlier.

Last year I was in Sussex for my mums birthday, the family all went out for a meal in a country pub which was delightful.
I cannot remember what it was called or where it was, so i am going to direct you there and someone can tell me where i went.
From Eastboune head up the A22 to the Hailsham area. We turned left off the A22 and disappeared into some woods and went past the speedway track, I think we went left through some more trees until we came to a very small village with a pub. There was a large car park next door and you entered the pub down the side. The pub had loads of hops hanging up and eggs for sale.
It was a great evening food was very nice but I thought they needed more choice if ale.
Where the hell was I?

Definately The Yew Tree at Arlington. The Old Oak at Arlington, is on the right hand side, opposite the woods as you head towards the Yew Tree, just over a mile further on.
Both are nice pubs, the Old Oak has just enlarged its beer garden/sun terrace area,and in my opinion is the better pub. Huge menu and size of portions at The Yew Tree, but a lot more of it is from the microwave.

Yes it was the Yew Tree.
But I have to say that I am particular about food and know good from poor but I would never have guessed that it was partially microwaved.
I thought for a pub it was very good and as you say huge portions

Not saying the food is poor, it is good, but the tell tale sign is the vast menu of main courses and deserts, and the speed in which they are delivered. Plus the Brakes frozen food lorry outside every other day.
A mate who is an electrician got called to sort out an electical fault in the kitchen and he said that it is wall to wall microwaves in there,
To be fair, I think it is only the main courses and deserts that are either pre-cooked or frozen, they do huge portions of vegetables and they seem fresh, I suppose because they accompany most main courses, Certainly their Sunday roasts are very good.

The first truly country pub I visited after coming to Sussex in 1979 was the 'The Star' in Old Heathfield. Haven't been there for a couple of years but always was outstandingly good for food and beer not to mention a fantastic garden.
