Mark Davis is playing Stoke's Dave Harold today for a place at snooker's big one in Sheffield. Currently 3-3, first to 10 wins. Come on, the St Leonards lad!

If success at snooker was as associated with growing up in seedy dives as it's reputation used to have it, then the Crucible would be full of St Leonards lads.

fantastic, good luck to him. A proper sport played and watched by millions in the UK, Ireland, China, Korea, as well as bits and pieces everywhere. But do we hear much about it in comparison to the minority sports that no sod plays like sledging, tiddly winks and the shot put that we have rammed down our throats iin the pointless minority sport championships -the Olympics.

He won 10-7, great effort. Caps best season of his career, highest ever world ranking after 19 years on the tour. Bit of a late developer. Draw being made at Wembley Stadium on Thursday. Ronnie in the first round?

He's earnt himself an extra £10k for qualifying, the lower ranked snooker players don't get much money compared to tennis, golf or even darts. I read in the Argus a few months ago that if he dropped off the main tour then he was going to do book keeping instead.

Hope he gets a good draw - a player that's out of form like Marco Fu or Stephen Hendry would give him a chance to get into the last 16 but to play Ronnie O'Sullivan at the Crucible would be very special.

Mark is a good mate of mine. We all grew up as kids in Hastings surrounded by excellent older players at the old Deluxe snooker club. Alison Fisher (ladies world snooker/American pool champ), Duncan Moore, Peter Daubney, all coached by ex-pro Derek Heaton. We produced a fair few from our own generation that had a crack at making a career out of the game too. I played County standard pool with Mark in Hastings for years. Top lad, top talent, but never quite cracked the big time. Been having a good run of late though, he won the new 6 reds challenge which gave him a nice little Xmas payday. Good family man, and honest hard-working lad. He did indeed re-train years back in book-keeping when his snooker career looked like petering out, but he has managed to making a living. He's made the crucible a few times before, and taken a few big scalps in his career. Hopefully he can shock a few people again.

Hasting's has produced a few very good darts players in it's time as well (and still going) - maybe Hasting's is the Sussex capital of 'pub style' games

Once upon a time certainly. When I moved into Hastings (Old Town area in 1983) the town had massive leagues for chess, darts, pool, snooker, shove ha'penny, cribbage, etc. Mainly the Old Town pubs and the towns plethora of working mens clubs and general social clubs (famous Chess Club, Silverhill Club, St. Marys Club, Old Hastings Club, numerous Angling associations, boat/yacht clubs, etc) kept those leagues thriving. The sale of many properties for residential development (cashing in during property boom), and general fancification of Old Town pubs (removal of dart boards and pool tables etc) seems to have cut these leagues to the core (many disappeared altogether). Shame, and at no small loss to community spirit either.

A great achievement. Snooker is a tough game and plenty of competition to get to the Crucible from lotsof other talented players. Knocking in 50 and 100 breaks is one heck of a thing to be able to do. He must have a great talent to get there. Pass on congratulations and will look out for him at the crucible
