Sounds better, all new and shiney with money left over. Over three years and best off all Deck chairs to stay, hurrah for the Cromwell Road/Downs end.

Looking forward to seeing it happen, is it the same as the previous design for the Gilligan end, anyone know if there are any pictures yet.

will the Gilligan Stand still have the nets underneath. that brings back many memories of trying to knock Kepplar Wessels head off in pre season training ( when he played for Brighton and Hove)

The nets in the Gilligan were nasty. I liked the ones in the buidling where the shop is now.

I remember those nets in the Gilligan, we occasionally could use them when rain had stopped play.

About 20 years ago now, I remember our very own El Presidente bowling at a very fierce pace to one of Sussex's up-and-coming young fast bowlers who really didn't like the short stuff. You could see he was itching to give El Pres a taste himself and looked disappointed when he wasn't the next man to take his turn... El Pres deciding to let me face the music.

I had 10 minutes of chin balls from both of them... the bastards.

Sussex unveil £8m plan From The Argus)

grand ground plans as given to members at the AGM last night. only thing which will upset a few fans will be the players going down to the sea end of the ground . lets hope the family area goes down there also !!!!!!

i'd be more extreme and put the family area about one mile to the south of where the gilligan is!why should i have to vacate my usual deckchair for children that dont even watch the cricket when they come for the occasional one dayer?there would have been an uproar if the sacred deckchair had been bull-dozed!

That'll get more youngsters interested in the sport, great idea

It's not the fact the youngsters come along and have absolutely no interest in cricket, it's the fact that for some completely stupid reason the club put the family area in probably the worst possible place they could... Time it was moved well away from the members area.

They better be keeping the traditional benches as well as the deckchairs!

Trigger knows what he is talking about. The family area should not encroach on the benches and deck chairs. Put it over where the WAGS shack is or develop that grass mound area in the SE corner.

What's the betting that the proposal to have corporate entertaining at the present players pavilion will lead to the McKay decking being extended right up to the nets?

this piece is about the grand plans re sussex c c c. there was a meeting at the ground last night and only 6 persona attended as loads of members were unaware of this meeting just some views of what the club are trying to push through with out members agreement.

Thank you Singapore and Sweatysock for your replies. You are both spot on with what you say. I was left with absolutely no doubt that whilst this project is to be staggered over 3 years, there is the upmost urgency to get it rushed through before anybody can amend it. I also agree that notification was sent out to members at short notice (although a reference to the forum without a definite date was made at the AGM). There did not appear to be any mention of the forum on the club website which we are told is now the main means of communication with members. I took issue with Jim May about notifying members of important news about our club some months ago on this messageboard when important news was leaked to Meridian.

With regards to the development, clearly the club is now indirectly stating that the recent construction of the indoor school and players' area was a mistake. It's only been there for a few years, but we are being told that it is not fit for the purpose for which it was constructed and the players must be re-housed in the new south stand. The committee then went on to spend over £300K of members / shareholders' money on architects fees for an excessive venture which was ditched. The architects' fees were finally written off in last year's accounts. We are now presented with a much more balanced proposal. However, as I have previously said, I do feel that the club would be better spending £5m-£6m initially rather than the proposed £8m.

To reduce the budget from £8m. to £6m. I would propose leaving the players in their modern, purpose built building and replacing the Gilligan with a more basic, cost effective stand. This would have a minimal impact on income, but when you factor in a reduction in the £1m professional fees, would preserve capital and bring the project somewhere near the figure I suggest. Whilst we all want the best surrondings for the players, we also want to maximise the chance of there still being a club for future players in years to come. As previously suggested, if the club's marketing and the economic environment are sufficiently strong, the remaining work could then be carried out once the cost of this work had been generated in advance through additional profit streams, thus always leaving a balance in the Trust of c.£5m.

Whatever anyone's personal view, I do feel that there must be an EGM prior to this project proceeding further, where members / shareholders would have a vote as to whether they wish the proposed project to proceed in its entirety or on a reduced basis or another alternative. I do feel that members / shareholders are not being given the opportunity to back their committee / board and I call on that committee / board to give us the opportunity to vote on the proposal at an EGM.
