Is American football really that popular outside of the US and maybe Canada?

Personally I think it's just a boring load of old shit but there seems to be a few fans of it on here so I thought it might be interesting to gauge NSC's opinion.

Well, in terms of revenue, it is i would guess. I am not a fan of it, i much prefer the arts, not really into sport

It's not just a game it's as much about Americans celebrating America, after all, it's a sport not played outside of North Anerica. It's as much a tradition as Thanksgiving. Even people who don't like sport watch it.

wow, really? So where is it popular, or does it just have enought pull to keep people worldwide interested enough to tune in? I've lived in a few places and never really noticed any support for it, apart from amongst Americans ofcourse.

Sundays match up was ALL American, in that it's 2 of the most popular teams playing, the viewing figures, will be through the roof.
If the Champs league only just beat the SB mark, this year the SB will overtake it.

I?t did make me laugh, though, the Green Bay players, at the end, were walking around in their t-shirts proclaiming 'World Champions'.

I don't enjoy it and won't ever watch a game of it, but I can't say I hate it.

It's like most events in America, massively OTT and hyped to the max. I saw some of it one year and just cringed and had to turn it off.
Some people actually get more excited about the adverts that are going to get shown and the half time show, it's supposed to be a sporting event FFS.
I might be inclined to watch the highlights, if they just put together all the action from the game (without the pointless timeouts every 3 minutes), it's probably quite an entertaining game but it gets ruined by the stop/start nature of it.

I love it. I admit it can be an acquired taste but it is mixture of brain, brawn and athleticism that I find utterly compelling at times. It also provides me with yet another vehicle for misery and despair as the Redskins f**k up yet another season.

They have a pre kickoff event and for the coin toss there were 6 ex players invied onto the pitch as well as, what I'd guess to be, American Footballs chairmen and president.

At half time they had a Black Eyed Peas gig during which about 500 dancers were dressed in LED clothing that changed colour throughout the performance, a circular stage was errected in the middle of the pitch which was later joined by other pieces of staging that spelt out the word Love. Also Slash emerged from underneath the stage, raised by a hydrolic platform before Usher absailed down from the TV screens to sing OMG.

It was full of adverts and massively hyped in a way that America likes to be extravegant and the centre of attention.

as far as annual ratings go 95% of America watches it as it is the only American Football prize, they have no league trophy so it is all about winning the superbowl

But they have no league, so it's not suprosing that there is no League Trophy.

111 million this year just in the USA, obviously the figures for outside of the states are considerably less
