I wonder if the American public were subjected to wall to wall TV news coverage of the last Lib Dem leadership battle, or the race to become the leader of the Tories, or even the resignation of blair and the unelected instigation of Brown as the British PM?

Doubt it.

So why the f*** are we being force fed this bollocks.

Because they are the one nation on Earth (that speak our language, ofsorts) that can really shape the future of our planet.

Because they're possibly the one country with the most influence in this world?

John McCain is a war hero. He was tortured by the Viet Cong.

War Hero to who exactly ? The only heroes in that war were the Vietnamese who fought for their right to national self-determination and kicked a bunch of child killing trash out of their country.

Who cares who the Americans elect anyway?

On one side you have candidates who are bankrolled by the big corporations to represent their vested interests, while spouting nauseating stuff about freedom, democracy, the right to own lots of guns , their belief in Gahd, and America being the greatest country in the world.

Whereas, in contrast, on the other side... you've got candidates who..... [all of the above].

So, absolutely nothing will change, whoever gets in. Same thing happens, every four years...

280 million Americans. And that's the best they can come up with?

However, the concept that a man who obeyed the draft and was sent to Vietnam only to surrender and become a prisoner - it's hardly the criteria required for political leadership!
Getting tortured, then qualifies McCain as a victim - that doesn't qualify anyone as a 'hero' either.

It's funny what people perceive as qualities and qualifications to lead in politics.

When I heard that Bill Clinton scarpered to Canada to dodge the draft to Vietnam, it didn't really make me think him a terrible politician - more likely smarter than a lot of schmoes who got shipped out to a strange jungle as young men, just to fight an enemy they couldn't have any personal issues with, in an environment they had no experience of, and for a cause they didn't fully understand.

Was GWBush a hero? Not on your life! His claims to have ever served his draft, were refuted by everyone in the supposed company he claimed to have served in! Not one person remembers him even being there. His whole life has been basically handed to him by his Daddy, and when 9/11 happened, he was visibly shitting himself that someone might be coming for him next ...... and his private jumbo went 'away somewhere' for a few hours, probably flitting about in the Gulf Of Mexico to be on the safe side.

America was shocked and Clinton ridiculed for answering that he "had smoked a marijuana cigarrette but did not inhale" - yet an ACTUAL cocaine drug conviction that GW had, was poo-poo'd and swept under the red carpet leading to his world.

Presidential criteria? Who cares?
War hero? What qualifies?
Personally, I don't even trust the election process, especially after GW even got in for a second term!
