At some point in the next 15 or so years Gus will write an "autobiography". It will be almost unreadable, self centred drivel and ghost written by someone desperate. It will sell by the bucket load in Brighton and the surrounding area.

What on EARTH are you on about? The first half was in the balance, then early in the 2nd Barnes came on and we could've easily been 2-0 up with his first two touches, barring a WONDER SAVE from Speroni and a clearance off the line. It was Gus's plan to come REALLY close to victory but just lose out, was it?

It was from the resulting corner from Speroni's save that Upson (I think, I've never watched that shower of a game back) that the ball was cleared off the line so we would have been hard pressed to go 2-0 up, given the corner would never have taken place. Whatever, we were 2nd best that night. I don't think any of us could reasonably argue that we deserved to win - They were the only 2 chances we had all night.

I think they were nervous. I think Zaha finally proved what a class player he is. I think Wurzel is cannier than we give him credit for. I think we played 150 minutes of the play-off game exactly how we should but when the goal didn't come we fell apart. I think the fans were nervous (hell I know I was). I think anyone but Palace we'd have won. I think its just one game and anything can happen in one game. I think that the unexpected happens every year in the play-offs.

I think suggesting Gus threw the game or didn't prepare is ludicrous.


If there was stuff going on in the background, I have to ask WHY and WHO! We're about to get into the prem, who the f**k is stirring the boat? Gus said on many occasions he wanted to get to the prem with us.

I'd agree with most of that re the actual match but I said before kick off that we should have been more attack minded. Gus went a little negative in my view, hoping to pick them off, and underestimated Zaha, who in fairness hadn't been anything special in the previous two matches. I really do believe that all was not well behind the scenes on the night and that COULD have affected Gus and the team.

We can't even say we gave that game a good shot imo, for whatever reasons. We were well beaten in the end.

We weren't great, don't get me wrong, but it was just 2 moments of brilliance by Zaha (and arguably 1 moment of brilliance by Speroni) - that was the ONLY difference between the sides on the night.

To say that these were are our only chances is simply untrue. We had a couple of very good chances at the start of the game. Buckley for one had a great chance after about 10 minutes that he really should have buried.

As I remember, we shaded it before they scored. We had some spells of intense pressure. What irked is we didn't really give it much of a go once we went behind.

We certainly didn't have a load of clear cut chances that night although I'd concede I've buried a lot of memories for understandable reasons. I was more responding to Mellotron's post which made it sound like 'we was robbed' From my memory (and certainly what I could bring myself to read the next day) I wasn't alone in my belief that we were beaten by the better side on the night. It was a pretty even first half, Palace came out better at the start of the 2nd, we had our 2 best chances then capitulated when we went one nil down.

FWIW the Sunderland job is a great one to pick up. Anything is an improvement on Di Canio, there is enough good players and enough of the season to recover and Poyet can clearly galvanise a team when the mood takes him. It will end in tears though. Poyet doesn't strike me a naval gazing type who will learn from his mistakes, more like one of your mates who can't settle down and has as many messy divorces as happy marriages.

Why is this so difficult to understand.

VERY FEW MANAGERS ARE NOW GIVEN THE CHEQUE BOOK AND A FREE REIGN.

Either the club is too poor to employ a scouting network.
Or
The manager is too entrenched to require one, a la Wenger.

Every other manager is now expected to work within a player recruitment team, spreading the work, spreading the risk, with the finite detail and control away from the manager or as is now first team coach.
