It's surely a good thing, a lot of people work Monday to Friday and don't have much opportunity to go shopping at a time that suits them and their family life.

The businesses will only open longer if it will be profitable to do so there has to be a demand for longer hours.

The existing staff won't be expected to work longer just because the store is open longer but could create more jobs and also help some of the lower paid workers earn more cash because there are more hours available to work which fits in with their life (usually younger workers who are in or recently out of education and therefore some of the lower earners anyway)

People can shop 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year online already, so why should we handicap the struggling high street with draconian laws that don't necessarily reflect modern life.

Yeah no need for this at all and they moan that families get little time as it is together....Where will it end 24/7 ?

If people intend to shop on a Sunday, won't it help family life because they can spend more time together in the morning / early afternoon rather than having to cut it short to get to the shops before they close (therefore possibly also less stressful for people as a result)

Not sure where I stand on this one but it does frustrate sometimes, especially in the Summer when you can't shop after four and need supplies etc.

An inevitable step on the road to 365/6 day-a-year openings.

If this passes then Easter Sunday will be the next one to go with Christmas Day following shortly thereafter.

In this day and age,it is, surely, nothing to get worked up about. Loads of people work on Sundays already. What's the big deal?

What about the hundreds of thousands of emergency service and healthcare workers that work on sunday? What's so shocking about a business trading a few hours more on a sunday? What's the difference?

It will only work if companies provide extra staff costs to enable the longer hours to be covered.

From experience however, what I would expect to happen is that no increase would be given and so staffing levels would have to decrease elsewhere in the week to compensate.

IMO Easter Day and Xmas Day opening will be announced at the same time to get things all tidied up.

The big 4 supermarkets will probably staff as normal during the core hours on Sunday and then channel customers through self scan checkouts for the rest of the day/evening/night

The big supermarkets already open from 11-4 on Sunday's so it's not as big a change as people are making out. Small shops already have regular opening hours on sundays

No need for extra Sunday trading now. So many supermarkets are open 24/7 through the week that no matter what shift pattern you're working, or what family set up you've got, there are plenty of chances to go shopping without yet more Sunday trading.

This is not on religious grounds, just a ffs why can't people leave Sundays alone as a day that's slightly different from the rest of the week.

Agree. All big businesses close on Sundays in Germany and it makes Sunday a lot better in my opinion.

I am indifferent on the matter but would point out that in a Scotland the Sunday trading rules are far more relaxed with larger stores opening pretty much their normal hours - quick Google of an area I know vaguely shows that the Tesco Superstore in Perth opens 0800 - 2000 and the Extra in the same town is still open for 24hrs on a Sunday. Sunday opening in France used to be rare but over the last 12 years or so we have been visiting more shops are opening on Sunday, am only. In coastal towns the shops do much as they please.
