Strength in depth

Right, pull up a pew and talk some to me my little beauties.

Has today's result/performance (and the two other cups in fact) highlighted that maybe we don't have the squad to cope with the demands of staying right up there at the summit of the league all season? Will a few long term injuries f*** us over royally? We are a little short on cover for the full backs and strikers. Discuss.

Gus thinks that the cup games are irrelevant , the fringe players are really not as shit as that if it came to playing in a league match.

I think he's saying that if you take what was apparently (unfortunately wasn't there today) poor performance as an indication of the fact he is not good enough to get in our team, for he is one of the 'fringe players' people must be referring to, based on one performance in a cup game - you are being overly dramatic.

It shows when we have to rely on OGH good servant as he has been with the emphasis on been. Also we have 2 right backs out on loan and nothing to replace them other than a man of 36 who retired because of injury and who could have to fill in at left back as well.

If we go up i can see both Argies being released. They simply cannot cut it even at this level.Batti is the better player but both will be gone.
I also think Smith will be gone as well.

I think everyone is missing the point of what Gus is trying to achieve. And is already a long way down the road of achieving. He is building a squad of 20-ish players, who all play the same way. For the first 80 mins of yesterday, the team played in the same way as the teams that steamrollered Charlton, Yeovil, Peterborough and Exeter. At least five players out there were short of 90 minute experience in the first team: Baz, Battipedi and Dunk none. Sparrow not many. And, Elphick not for a few weeks. Yet they came in and the team played in the same fashion, before playing long ball for the last ten...which had to be worth a shout anyway.

No club steamrollers week after week, not Chelski, not Manure, not even Barcelona in their recent pomp. We had an off day. It happens. I think it might well have happened even if Bennett, Kishishev and Lua Lua had played (and the latter wasn't available, anyway). And give credit to Woking. They ran their knackers off and were justifiably proud of what they had achieved.

The show will be back on the road soon.

The players there ARE good enough, what was lacking was motivation, it was obvious that Gus didn't give a toss, and therefore neither did the players, I don't think we should assume that is how they would play in the league, and we have seen several of them put in much better shifts in the last couple of months.

Thought Batti did okay yesterday, but agree on him, Baz and Smith's possible release. Baz was blasting some cracking long range shots in in the pre-match warm-up yesterday, but none of it translated into the game itself.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
3 of the 6 changes were in defence (inc GK) and Woking didn't get one shot on target, therefore another clean sheet.
Dicker and Sparrow are first team regulars who had an off day.
