Batsman that averages 40 odd, plays all 3 formats and bowls a bit so can't ask for much more. Disappointing we had to go the Kolpak route but no blame attached to Sussex, there aren't many, if any decent English players available at the moment.

Certainly none within our price range and who are willing to play in Div 2.

Where is it confirmed he is a Kolpak?

Sussex have confirmed that he's a Kolpak player. Davis has also said they're close to making another couple of signings - sounds promising.

And no overseas player yet, still time for that Aussie opener

Sounds like a decent addition - sounds like he should be able to cope with most Division 2 attacks and give some balance to the attack. Needed with Cachopa released.

He's South African and this is not our overseas signing so I assumed that it must be. Think someone else has said it's now confirmed as Kolpak.

Mark Davis said so.

"Mark Davis believes Sussex have pulled off a real coup in signing South Africa all-rounder Stiaan van Zyl – thanks to a little help from a friend.

Van Zyl has decided to call time on his international career at the age of 29 to join Sussex on a three-year deal as a Kolpak signing.

The left-hand batsman and medium pace bowler made the last of his 12 Test appearances against New Zealand less than three months ago but has decided his future lies in England and was persuaded Sussex was the ideal destination by countryman David Wiese."

Pleased to sign a good player, but putting aside my Sussex-tinted glasses for a moment, that quote is terribly sad, and does not say great things about the state of Test cricket, or IMO of this chap's character.

There isn't much money in South African cricket if you're not in the national side. As a professional cricketer, he'll earn more playing for us than he would just playing provincial cricket in South Africa and hoping he's selected for the national team.

Evidently, or he wouldn't be coming.

As I say - his decision reflects very poorly on the state of Test / SA cricket, and he's chosen the money over the glory. If he was 38 and hadn't played a Test in three years, fair enough, but he's at his peak and played this summer. Shame.

Same story in New Zealand, as for Zimbabwe...........

Jacques Rudolph did the same thing and signed a Kolpak with Yorkshire and was younger than Van Zyl and ended up being picked again for SA.
