And how many more opportunities will Lampard, Gerrard get??

The furthest we have progressed with these players over the last 10 years since World Cup 2002 is 2 quarter finals in 5 tournaments.

Surely the likes of Rodwell should be blooded in the squad, why stick with players who have proven consistently that they are not up to the job??

Looking at that squad really brings home the fact that English football is currently bereft of world class players and that we are light years behind the Spanish, German, Dutch and even the French FFS!!

Rodwell is injured I think, but yes otherwise he should be there. He may not even make Team GB. Don't get me started on Downing.

I was at the press conference and it is clear the press are out for him already.

I think what he has done is gone for a blend of experience + a bit of new blood, to keep the heat off him a bit. But for the WC qualifiers you can expect the old guard to be moved out and newer players to be brought in. Realistically had we not suffered from injuries as much, the team would have been a lot different that it was. Jack Rodwell being one of these.

Interestingly, one of the journos who works in the North West, reckons Downing is technically one of the best wingers we have + one of the fittest trainers, but he hasn't found his form in actual games. Be interesting to see if Roy can get the best out of him.

If anything Adam Johnson is a better player than Downing, I mean O assists and 0 goals all season? Mad

How can you complain about Gerrard and Lampard honestly ???

We NEED experience in our squad.

Downing is our only real left sided player (admittedly he's not great) but Adam Johnson has barely played this season.

Roy is going on people that play, rather than bench warmers.

johnson is a right winger and there are already 2 in the squad

downing is our second choice LEFT winger because there are hardly any other players who play there

That's the problem though isn't it - we need experience but the experienced players we have in Gerrard and Lampard are past it and have proven that at international level they are useless. We have to face it that there are no world class English players.

I doubt if we will make it out of our group tbh. Three media over-hyped games where we will be shown to be lagging miles behind the rest, due to the PL's imported players not letting English players get a look in

Rooney?

At least we don't have the sick notes of King or Woodgate in the squad.

We have a squad of good players, not world class, but good players.

joe hart is world class, as is rooney

gerrard and lampard aren't "useless" at international level, they're just "average"

I have seen Downing play incredibly well on the wing but only on odd occasions which is a real shame because England need quality left wingers. Anyway I suspect Young will play on the left wing with Walcott on the other side should Hodgson play 442. Not sure about Wellbeck, would have preferred to see Sturridge in his place. Pretty unsurprising squad, and the media are already making waves about The Old Crock Rio being left out and trying to create a storm in a tea cup.

I'd take Johnson even though he plays on the other wing if he was f***ing injured ahead of Downing. Johnson without any f***ing legs is better than Downing. In fact Johnson with no head and no legs, just a torso that can't see or kick is better than Downing. Actually Johnson with no legs, no head, only a torso and having shown no discernible skill for football in his life would be better than Downing.

This sums it up and before anyone starts with "It's the daily mail, what do you expect", I hate the daily mail too. It's about football and this is one Liverpool fan's view. Bang on in my view.

Stewart Downing not good enough for Liverpool | Mail Online

Lets face it, if Wilshire was fit, he would have replaced Lampard, I think Walker is acctually injured (or a doubt at very least) and he would have been going, Slightly supprised that Richards isnt going and that there isnt 5 forwards to cover for Rooney's suspension.

All in all, its a pretty standard selection though. What can you expect from a manager who hasnt really seen people play and hasnt had time to work out what system he wants to play. If the FA were really bothered about this tourniment they would have a) got him in months ago or b) let Pierce do the Euros and have RH taking over after that. (possibly even involved as an advisorary role)

I think what he has done is good given the circumstances. Got some youth in there and at the same time gone for the 'stick to what you know' tactic. I would expect a big overhaul of players when the qualifiers start in September.

We were never going to win the Euros and I doubt we would have made the semi's either. So what ever he did he will get blasted in the media.
