Hi, im a Stoke City supporter and im going to give you my honest oppinions of Quitterill.

When he was appointed manager of Stoke we were very excited because of his record at Cheltenham. He only signed one player, Chris Greenacre from Mansfield.

During the pre-season he immediatly ignored two of our best players (Petur Martiensson and Bjarni Gudjonsson).

The season started with a 0-0 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, we were playing OK, not spectacular, the players looked as though they wernt enjoying themselfs as a couple were kept on being played out of position.

When he left there was an uproar! quitting to become assistant manager of a Premeirship club thats going to be relegated, he came saying he wants his players to show comitment and loyalty to the club and then he buggers off at the first oppertunity.

Just after he left he said he had done a good job and left us in a good position, we were 15th and 3 points above the relegation zone having only won 2 of about 9 games!

Overall i felt he is a good coach but a poor manager.

He is excellent at motivating but has the tactical knowlege of a brick wall!

His playing style is long ball, very boring and direct. That was no good for us because we were playing 5ft6 Marc Goodfellow up front.

I believe that if he had stayed we would have been relegated last season. Tony Pulis came in and organised us very well and is an excellent tactitian.

Dont be fooled because he did a good job at Cheltenham, managing at a higher level is totally different.

a UEFA coaching badge means nothing! I lost count of the amount of times he mentioned it in interviews, its results on the pitch that count, not whats written on a peice of paper.

If you want a manager with a good record in Division 2/1, a manager thats an excelent motivator and PLAYS FOOTBALL, look no further than Lou Macari!

I agree with most of what you have said except the last line

Huddersfield fans would disagree with you

He got Huddersfield to the play offs, when he left they were relegated

Wasn't he the manager when they got relegated from the First division the season before?

He was caretaker manager for the last few games when they were relegated from Div 1.

About Megson, im not too bothered, he had to be sacrificed for the takover to happen, if it didnt there might not have been a Stoke City.

Thanks for your comments Dazza.
I have mentioned his long ball tactics for Cheltenham in another thread. But there was the opinion that it was down to quality of players he had.
But I am now convinced that this is the way he likes to play.

I was never too keen on the possibility of Cotterill becoming Manager. Reading the comments on this thread, I feel he isn't the right man for the job........

What we DON'T need is a motivator. We have an excellent captain and assistant manager for that. What we do need is a tactician.

Cross Cotterill off the list then

My sentiments exactly, Cotterill stands for everything Brighton is not, its got to be Nigel Clough.

Are you sure?! Sounded like a classic case of 'jobs for the boys' from where I was. The majority of Stokies I've spoken to (albeit on Rivals) get very tetchy indeed when you mention Megson. Seems to be definitely degree of regret where he's concerned.

West Brom. Could it have been you?

We will never know, he took over at West Brom in the first division and did have money to spend, he wouldnt have had that at Stoke, i feel he would have done a decent job though but without the club progressing, with the takover the club has progressed.

As for Cotterill i think he will be a decent assistant manager/coach under an expereinced manager that likes to play football, I cant see him having much success as a manager higher than Div 3, it would have been interesting to see how he would have done with Cheltenham in division 2 had he stayed.

Anyone who saw Cheltenham in Div 3 or that appalling Stoke side that somehow managed to beat us at Withdean last season, would not want him as manager.

DK goes to most home games doesn't he ;)

Cotterill did very well at Cheltenham but he realised that Cheltenham is a football back water and frankly, the lower reaches of Division Two were really about as far as they would go. I would cast doubts on his longevity here as he seemed to jump ship from Stoke without much trouble despite hardly giving them a chance.

Frankly I'm not keen on him, I'd rather give Bob Booker an extended run to see how he fares. I accept that the last two internal promotions were disarterous but I believe this will be third time lucky. There's not a whole lot wrong with having a manager who everybody likes. Face it, managers who rely on fear and intinidation to motivate players can screw themselves eventually. Would Beckham still be at Manure if Fergeson had retired last season ?

Interesting stuff. Mind you we we got Peter Taylor this board was full of Leicester fans telling us what a useless manager he was - and they certainly had a point re his siginings.

I was talking to a mate of mine last night who's a Stoke fan and he also said Cotterill liked the long ball. Mind you I also told him that on the evidence of most games this season Coppell was a long ball man at heart!

Hmm. Like some others I'm not 100% convinced of him now.

If it keeps Rix & Gray out of our club then fine but i'd rather have Tigana or Dowie or Kinnear or even Booker myself.

We actually need, at this juncture, a manager who is loyal to the club (at last) .
With these high-profile blokes taking off for 'bigger clubs' there's a continuingchance that they'll pop back to cherry-pick our class players (or ones they brought into the team) and ensure that they do ok at our expense.

The credentials for the loyal man are definitely already pinned to the chest of Bob Booker - and I have to think that if he has the players on his side and their loyalty in kind - then we won't fare too badly.

What we don't need is a mercenary who wants to use DK and BHA as a stepping stone to 'bigger clubs' . Whether he likes to admit it or not, Coppell has ultimately and effectively fulfilled that very same fate - I only hope the compensation is put to good use.

Give BB a good crack at it, with the patience, help and understanding of everyone, but equally with the knowledge that a 12-game losing streak is not an acceptable sacrifice. That's fair enough in the professional world isn't it?
