*Steam returns to Uckfield for first time since the 1960s*
The glorious age of rail travel will be relived on Saturday, October 27, when a steam train will make its way south from London and on into Uckfield for the first time since British Rail abandoned steam in the 1960s.
More than forty years on, The Railway Touring Company’s ‘Sussex Explorer’ steam service will travel to the end of the line at Uckfield in what is a ‘once in a generation’ event.
Hauled by 1947-built 34067 Tangmere, the train of 1950s coaches will depart from London Victoria and East Croydon to join the Oxted branch and steam to the end of the line at Uckfield where it will stop briefly before taking day trippers on to Littlehampton for the afternoon.
“We are delighted to have gained permission from Network Rail to take passengers by steam down the line to Uckfield,” said Nigel Dobbing of The Railway Touring Company. “Many people young and old will be keen to see Tangmere as she steams along the route and we anticipate that The Sussex Explorer will receive an enthusiastic welcome at Uckfield station. We hope that many local people will join us on board for this once in a generation trip.”
The Sussex Explorer will depart London Victoria at 08.25, stopping to collect passengers at East Croydon at 09.32 and pulling into Uckfield under steam at 10.54.
With no turning facility at Uckfield, the service will leave the station minutes later at 11.00 to retrace its route in reverse through Oxted under class 37 diesel power before steam locomotive Tangmere takes over again on route for Horsham.
It will then pick up a secondary line of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway to Littlehampton arriving at 15.00 with three hours for passengers to explore this attractive Sussex coast resort with its beach and pier.
The steam train will depart Littlehampton at 17.25 to return to East Croydon and London Victoria.
The people of Uckfield and the surrounding area are being offered the opportunity to buy a single fare from London Victoria or East Croydon to Uckfield for £30 standard class by quoting Code: UCK when booking tickets. Tickets are only available from The Railway Touring Company on 01553 661500 or at www.railwaytouring.co.uk.
Tickets from Uckfield to Littlehampton returning to East Croydon or London Victoria are also available with a £20 discount on all fares quoting Code: UCK. Sussex Explorer tickets for the full day trip range from an Adult Standard return at £74 up to a Family Premier return. The Premier tickets include full English breakfast (from Victoria) light lunch and four course dinner at £495.
The Sussex Explorer via Uckfield is one of a series of steam services from London stations, including Victoria, Paddington and Kings Cross, operated by The Railway Touring Company this autumn. Historic locomotives Brighton-built Tangmere and LNER A4 Pacific Bittern will steam in to collect passengers on their way to the south coast, to Bath, Bristol, Canterbury, York and Worcester for nostalgic day trips.
Heritage rail travel operator The Railway Touring Company has announced that it will run eight special steam services this autumn from stations in the city in addition to services from Kettering, Cleethorpes, St Albans, York and Liverpool Lime Street.
The steam season in the capital will start with The Sussex Explorer on Saturday, October 27. The second steam outing is on Saturday, November 17, when Tangmere will haul The Southern Belle service heading for Portsmouth Harbour. Day trippers will be able to see the famous ships HMS Victory, Mary Rose and HMS Warrior, take a trip up the newly built Spinnaker Tower with its outstanding views towards the Solent or see the naval fleet in dock.
Steam locomotives will become a regular sight. The ‘Bath & Bristol’ will run from Victoria on Saturday, November 24; the ‘White Rose’ Kings Cross to York service on Saturday, December 1; the ‘Christmas Elgar Explorer’ on Sunday, December 2, from Paddington to Worcester; the ‘Bath Christmas Market’ on Thursday, December 6; the ‘Christmas White Rose’ Kings Cross to York on Saturday, December 15; and the ‘Canterbury Christmas Belle’ on Friday, December 21.
Travellers will enjoy the excitement of travelling in vintage carriages along main line rail routes at speeds that are not possible on shorter runs along preserved rail lines. The locomotives are expected to reach 75 miles per hour.
Tangmere, which celebrates its 60th birthday this year, is a Battle of Britain Class locomotive designed by Oliver Vaughan Snell Bulleid for the Southern Railway in the 1940s. Named after the military airfield in Sussex, Tangmere promises to provide a thrilling ride, says The Railway Touring Company.
