It's such a shame that these days they have to practically release the film in serial form through features and trailers in the months preceding the actual release. I'm a bit sick of seeing JJ Abrams' smug face all over the internet.

John Carter and Tomorrowland were both fairly good. Just pleased Lucas isn't writing the scripts.

I think they'll do a good job but , as good news as it is for stunts and Special Action trade ,I think they'll overkill the franchise with all the films they've got planned . They'll kill the appetite for it. 7 films planned so far I think.

My first inkling that the newer films might not be quite as good as the originals was when the famous writing started rolling up the screen on Episode 1. The opening line being:

"Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute"

Taxation of trade routes...? WTF is all this ?

"I think you can kiss your trade franchise goodbye, Viceroy". Wow. gripping stuff.

I can't bl**dy wait. That 'reel' shows how much care / attention / love has gone into making this film. After the mess that were GL's prequels, this could makr a return the magic of the original trilogy.

As mentioned, Lucas isn't involved in the story so there's a chance it won't be shit. I recall when we went to watch Phantom Menace. The feeling was good, the famous music and scrolling came on screen, lovely stuff. I would say within 20 mins the whole audience could tell it was a total Turkey. I think we lasted about 40 mins before walking out.

Also, anyone criticising JJ Abrams is missing the point. He's a very talented film maker, who is a complete Star Wars fanboy. He did a great job in bringing Star Trek back, and he's not as much a fan of THAT franchise. the fact that he's gone for as many practical affects as possible, and isn't seduced by the dark side of digitial film-making are both great indicators as to the tone and feel of the movie we'll be seeing in December. He's also a good story teller, and working with Lawrence Kasdan (who co-wrote Empire Strikes Back) is also a good sign.

As [MENTION=16359]JBizzle[/MENTION] has said, the only risk is our expectaions. However, it HAS to be better than Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

You can see why they picked the middle 3 of Lucas's Star Wars saga when he must have first pitched it for funding. The first film is epic because it is so simple, so beautifully made, there are no spare scenes, it just jumps in that first scene and never lets up. Getting Irvin Kershner to direct Empire Strikes Back was also a stroke of genius, taking the sort of happy fairytale ending of Episode 4, and making a much darker, but more character based approached with the whole Han / Leia love storey woven into a seemingly indestructible empire.

When they read the start of Episode 4 compared to Episode 1, clearly someone picked up on the fact that taxation of trade federation routes wasn't going to be a complete winner at the box office. The prequels survived being pretty poor just through every Stars Wars fan wanting to know what happened to get us to Episode 4. On that level, it was difficult for Lucas to fail, but he so nearly did. Caught between a young and older audience, CGI, it is all a bit of a mess, even if personally I enjoyed the story unfolding.

When they read the start of Episode 4 compared to Episode 1, clearly someone picked up on the fact that taxation of trade federation routes wasn't going to be a complete winner at the box office. The prequels survived being pretty poor just through every Stars Wars fan wanting to know what happened to get us to Episode 4. On that level, it was difficult for Lucas to fail, but he so nearly did. Caught between a young and older audience, CGI, it is all a bit of a mess, even if personally I enjoyed the story unfolding.

I feel that was in part their downfall - the fact that we knew where they had to end limited GL's room for creativity, and as has been shown he's not the best story teller out there, and can't write dialogue for toffee. There was (IMHO) a sense of inevitability about the story line - especially as we hit film 3, as we all knew how things start in A New Hope. It was a waste of 3 films.

Quantum of Solace is an underrated film when watched on it's own. I didn't think much of it on first viewing as it had been 3 years since seeing Casino Royale. Watch them in fairly quick succession, and QofS is actually far better than it seems as a direct sequel to CR.
