Standard of Refs at Euro 2004

I for one thought the standard of the refs at Euro 2004 was particularly poor this year and something needs to be done (although I'm not sure what).

Stamping on free flowing football to give us the stop start game we all hate. This is not rugby!

Not one yellow card issued for diving/play acting.

Advantage being played when there is clearly no advantage to be had.

Blatent Homer refs in nearly all of portugals games.

I thought that the standard of refereeing was the best I've seen in an international tournament. Certainly better than what you see in England - I don't remember a ref getting conned by a player and wrongly awarding a penalty.

That said, I agree with you that more yellow cards should've been dished out for diving.

Yep, couple of blatant dives that went unpunished in the final last night. Simulation as it's called should be punished. Yellow card, red card, firing squad, whatever.

I thought about that. In the first couple of games there were 2/3 bookings for 'play acting' but as the tournament has gone on more and more instances of diving have gone unpunished.

FIFA need to sort themselves out, if they say something then they should f***ing well do it.

My view is if a ref does not brandish a yellow card for diving then thay are supporting the practice of diving!

Refereeing has much improved. The last two World Cups were spoilt by bad refereeing. This tournament was not spoilt in this way.

Except for the RIDICULOUS 'foul' given against the hapless Portugese keeper in the quarted finals.

Innit.

There din't seem to be many red cards this time around which was good as it ruins the game.

As far as diving is concerned, it should warrent a straight red. It makes the game shit.

My two main points were not letting the game flow and not stamping down on diving. When they did let advantage be played there was no advantage to be had. Again any wonder why players are falling over themselves to fall down?

If players are not given an incentive to stay on their feet then why should they? Obviously a sense of fair play is not in their mindset.

Why do they insist on sharing out the refereeing?

If you have the best teams in Europe/The World playing at a tournament, then why not have the best refs?

If that means that you have 5 from England, 4 from Italy and 4 from Spain, say, then so be it. Why should a referee who regularly takes charge of highly emotional local derbies in Lichenstein be let loose on England v Germany

Why not have refs from all over the world rather than Europe. We've all seen the Eurovision song contest! There's no such thing as a neutral ref in Europe even if he is Swiss!

And why wasn't that cheating bastard Deco not booked last night for falling down

Deco last night for me was what prompted me to start this thread. Time and time again he went down on the edge of the box looking at the ref. The ref was having none it. Which is good. But let him get away with it! Not good.

Ronaldo, too. How many times did he fall on the floor and then immediately look up at the ref? Twat. The Greeks aren't saints, but a number of times they were stumbling after a tackle or having been pushed, but regained their footing and kept fighting for the ball. That desire to play the game won them the match.

Everyone kept going on about how fit the greeks were. Bollocks. They are all professional athletes. What seperated the Greeks from the rest was there disire to get the ball and play the game for their country. Unlike the overpaid premadonnas of England, Italy, Portugal and Holland!

Davids 'teapot' stance when portugal score personified this.
