They happen to be my favourite band, hence the username. With songs such as

Goodbye Girl,
Cool For Cats,
Up the Junction
Tempted,
Black Coffee in Bed
Labelled with Love
Hourglass
etc etc etc

I would say that Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook are up their with the best songwriters Britain has produced. Do others agree with me or am I talking tosh.

I only ever saw them once, as support for Dr Feelgood at Top Rank in Brighton many years ago. At the time theyed just released Take Me I'm Yours. I have to say they were pretty crap that night, thankfully they seem to have improved as time went on and did do some decent songs along the way.

Up the junction is my fav.

"We stayed in by the telly, although the room was smelly"

If you can make lines like that sound good you really are a great band.

Take it to the bridge
Throw it overboard
See if it will swim
Back onto the shore
No-ones in the house
Everyone is out
All the lights are on
And the blinds are down

What the f*** ?

Squeeze are class.
Have to add Pulling Muscles and Take Me I'm Yours to that list, but
Up the Junction is one of my favourite songs of all time

East side story is one of the best, most underated albums, and Tempted their best song (not actually written by the dynamic duo!). Still listen to it. Got most of their other records too. Genius. they have deffo had their dodgy spells though, around the time of Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti, and have never heard anything after Some Fantastic Place. Is it any good.

I heard one of them interviewed a while back and they said that Some Fantastic Place is about a friend of the band who died quite young.

If you listen to the song knowing that, it is a great tribute to a departed friend.

One of my all time fave bands. Saw them live twice ...brilliant on both occasions. "Pulling mussells from a shell" is well up there in my all time top 10. Difford and Tilbrook are definitely one of the best songwriting partnerships of their generation.....lets hope they can one day settle their differences and tour again.

Always found them a bit hit or miss personally and I always prefered it when Tillbrook sang rather than Difford. Saying that 'Up the Junction' is an absolute classic and there are very few songs that are lyrically any better. I still have the original 7" on lilac vinyl, think I'll have to dig it out and give it a spin.

So do I...

What would that be worth on ebay...?!

Some fantastic Place was indeed written about a friend of theirs. Indeed it was written about Glenn Tilbrooks first girlfriend. She died many years later (from Leukeamia), but the song could be related to any loved one that has departed. I think it is a very nice/sad song.

They recorded many a fine tune after that including Ridiculous in 1995. Having said that, Domino in 1998 is a bit patchy.

Difford and Tilbrook have since made up, although whether they will record together is open to debate.

Probably the best to look out for are East Side Story and anything from 1991 Play, 1993 Some Fantastic Place and 1995 Ridiculous.

SOME FANTASTIC PLACE

She gave to me her tenderness
Her friendship and her love
I see her face from time to time
There in the sky above
We grew up learning as we went
What a voyage our life could be
It took us through a wilderness
Into the calmest sea
Her smile could lift me from the pain
I often found within
She said some things I won't forget
She made a few bells ring
So simple her humility
Her beauty found in grace
Today she lives another life
In some fantastic place
She showed me how to raise a smile
Out of a bed of gloom
And in a garden sanctuary
A life began to bloom.
She visualised a world ahead
And planned how it would be
She left behind the strongest love
That lives eternally
I have the hope that when it's time
For me to come her way
That she'll be there to show me round
Whenever comes that day
Her love was life and happiness
And in her steps I trace
The way to live a better life
In some fantastic place
