They don't bother me particularly and don't harm me, so if I see a spider I get a glass or pick it up with my hand and throw it out the window, the other half on the other hand is shit scared of them.

Not really sure why they scare people so badly anyway, they are tiny and don't harm you at all, Australia on the other hand.....

Way out west
Happy to share my house with spiders, always have been, I look on them as being very low maintenance pets...they trap and eat any flies that stray into the house, which saves me the job, and I don't need to worry about getting someone in to feed them when I am away.

I've often wondered about this seeing as I a) hate spiders and b) want to go to Australia in the next couple of years. I'm aware of what types of spiders they get over there and how huge they are, but in reality what can a tourist in a major Australian city expect in terms of human-spider interaction. Are they EVERYWHERE? Or would you almost certainly not see one? Would they get in your hotel or would you have to go into the country to find them? Or is the answer somewhere in between all that?

I've been to some places like India, Sri Lanka and Venezuela and had the fear of encountering some grizzly monster spider. Thankfully I never saw anything larger than your average UK spider though.

Never been to Australia though and they have some real terrors over there

Abort, retry, fail
I shared an outdooor toilet and shower (seperately) with two immense spiders, in Ecuador.

Really not fussed by common house spiders. Happily live with them as they catch the pesky flies that seem to be rather prevalent.

I did have a close encounter with a monster of a spider in Australia. I was in Fraser Island and nipped into some bush for a pee, only to find that I was pissing on a rather large web, which attracted the hairy beast towards my phallus (that does sound very Mills and Boon).

Spiders get the thumbs up over 'ere.

Badger. I went to Australia and spent six weeks travelling up the East Coast. I only saw a couple of spiders in that time. I saw more snakes in a day, so you will be fine.

Not at all, I went to Australia for the 2007 ashes series:glare:, I only encountered 1 or 2 spiders on the whole trip and both were in my apartment building so I just called up someone from reception, in general if you don't deliberately look for them and leave them alone they won't bother you.
However, as with most places theres always a risk you will encounter a really big one, especially in Australia.

Do those countries get proper BIG ones then? Sorry for my lack of knowledge, I'll admit now I'm far from a nature expert. If/when I go to Australia it would play on my mind though, and I'd be overly cautious everywhere I went I think. In India, Sri Lanka etc do you think you just got lucky by avoiding them, or is it that only a tiny minority of people ever come face to face with one anyway?

Don't really know to be honest and I didn't want to research too much into the subject before I went there!

Venezuela worried me most because it shares the same land mass (although quite a long way away) as Costa Rica where I think the biggest ones live. Tried not to look too hard and didn't see any there.

:shudder:

They have MASSIVE lizard things in Sri Lanka. Can't remember what they're called. They didn't bother me though.

Also had some rather cute chipmunks there with a penchant for 7up
