Speed camera question time

I drive past it every single day and yet today I was obviously snoozing at the wheel when I passed the camera by the schools on Ditchling Road doing 35. The thing flashed me and I shat myself but I'm a little confused.

I was heading northbound, out of Brighton, and there are no timing marks on that side of the road. I've always assumed the camera was just for traffic coming into the 30 zone, not out of it.

So does this camera do both sides of the road, and if not why did it flash me?

I'm concerned because my insurance is due for renewal in a couple of weeks and if I'm about to get some points on my licence I'll get a new policy early to avoid having to divulge my foolish offence and up my premium.

Anyone know anything about this particular evil machine?

Evil? I'd have thought that a speed camera by a school and opposite a park is EXACTLY where a speed camera should be. You shouldn't be driving at such a speed in that sort of area.

I think you will be OK. But you have to inform your insurance company of any conviction as soon as it happens or they wont pay out.

I've been flashed a few times going north on Ditchling Rd when doing 35 but I've never had a fine. You're right it is evil but I reckon you'll be OK.

Probably fine - a lot of cameras are set off by wind, buses or cars coming the other way for no apparent reason. If there are no timing marks, it isn't legally enforcable. The one at Beddingham went off 15 seconds after I passed it with no car anywhere near it.

It often does. The ones on the crossing have never worked by the way.

I have set a camera off in exactly the same situation and didn't hear anything about it, without the timing marks on the road they can't fine you.

You're quite right. But my gripe was with speed cameras in general, many of which are just money making machines for the local police, in areas where there's no real need for them. But in this instance I agree with the camera and recognise it was my mistake to not have slowed for it, however doing 35 just yards away from entering a 40 limit, at 5:30am I would consider harsh grounds for a penalty.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it would seem that hopefully I am safe

that one quite often goes off when cars are going up ditchling road. those style of camera do not register speed heading towards them, only away from them. the new digital type that do face the driver are different and register speed as you drive towards them.

that one in ditchling road will send out tickets for 35 mph if you are going down the hill pass the school. and rightly so.

They can still do you if you're going towards a camera, but only if there are marks on your side of the road. So I think you're safe.

The one at Preston Park on the London Road is particularly good for that. It's always fun to drive towards it at 36mph and make it flash just as someone's going past it in the opposite direction at 29mph, just to see the look on their faces when they think they've been zapped

Did you know speed cameras are illegal, they infringe your European human rights.
Bottom line is you are admitting to a crime (abiet not a very serious one) by signing the form and taking the fine and points. It's down to the police to prove it was you driving (a photo of the back of your car and the back of your head wouldn't stand up in court). Admitting to an offense of any nature, whether it be dropping a crisp packet to mass murder, is against your human rights. Innocent until PROVEN quilty.

Just tell them to f*** off, but in a nice way!!

Say that again when someone runs your six year old child over while doing 31 in a 30.

No, it was hypothetical, but if that had happened to you, you might think differently.

Not saying cameras aren't sometimes annoying, but if your family had suffered at the hands of a speeding driver, it might change your perspective, that's all.

Speed cameras are good, if you dont want a fine dont speed.
if Speed cameras stop one death a year they are doing a good job.

So you just refuse to pay the fine? Does that work? Has anyone done that?
