I was working with 4 Spanish lads today, all Barcelona fans (originally from Barcelona) .the subject got round to football and of course I mentioned the magnificent Vicente Rodriguez. None of them had a clue who I was talking about. I brought a picture up on my phone and one showed a vague recognition. Even more shocking. They had no idea who Gus Poyet was.
Are Spanish supporters really that insular? Imagine an England supporter not knowing a recent international.

Catalans may not care for the Spanish national side.

Yes, but people from Barcelona don't see themselves as Spaniards, they are Catalans, and don't identify much with the national team. I was talking to a Barca guy the other day, and he has little interest in the Spanish team - in fact, he said he hopes they get knocked out soon, so as to reduce the risk of injury to the Barcelona players in the Spanish team.

Were they very young?

Gus in Spain was 15+ years ago, and until Vicente takes us to the CL, his best years were some way back.

Did you talk to them about the national team? It does seem odd for them not to have heard of someone who's played so many games for their country, even if they are Catalan through and through.

(...sorry to repeat myself, but this thread seemed to be going that way :p)

His best years were most of the 2000s, not that long ago. And Valencia were winning the league and that, so I don't see how Barcelona fans wouldn't have noticed!

i know a real madrid 'fan' (they are from asturias, in northern spain, their local team technically is Gijon) and they know EVERYTHING about real madrid, but absolutely nothing about any of the other 19 teams in the spanish league. How many of us could name the barcelona starting 11? He can't. However, ask him about the Real Madrid youth B team and he could talk for hours...

maybe its a spanish thing? you just tend to ignore the rest of the football world?

I know some Valencia supporters, who never knew who Brighton were but now look out for our results week in week out. They do seem to know a lot about football though.
