Not sure how "new" this is, but SASTA are now pre-cancelling trains (ie giving up). Its mainly the coastline servicesd affected. http://www.southernrailway.com/your-journey/conductor-sickness

Cancellations to Southern services as a result of Conductor absence through sickness
We are experiencing much higher than usual levels of Conductor absence through sickness. This has meant that regrettably, we have had to cancel some of our services that require Conductors. The nature of the situation means that we only know what the levels of sickness are each day on the day, and have had to adjust the service accordingly. Cancelling trains on an ad-hoc basis like this doesn’t help you when you find out at very short notice that your train has been cancelled.

While we are still experiencing the sickness issue, we have decided to make things more predictable for you by pre-cancelling a small number of trains each day. We believe this will reduce the number of short-notice cancellations we have to make each day.

We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause, but hope you understand this is being done to keep cancellations to a minimum in what is a very difficult time for us all.

The following trains will be cancelled each day while the current level of sickness continues:

From Brighton
06:27 Brighton to Southampton to be cancelled. (There is a 05.30 and 07.05 service either side)
07:30 Brighton to Southampton (There is a 07.05 and 08.33 service either side)
11:10 Brighton to Seaford
12:23 Brighton to West Worthing

23:17 Victoria to Worthing Cancelled (Passengers can travel on the 22.47 or the 00.05 from Victoria)

13:25 Seaford to Brighton
14:54 Seaford to Brighton
17:20 Seaford to Brighton
18:41 Seaford to Brighton

Not that you'd particularly notice this on the day I suppose, being as vast swathes of trains are cancelled left right and centre, and the entire timetable is in a state of permanent daily meltdown. But I particularly liked the line that they're cancelling trains "to keep cancellations to a minimum". :lolol:

You couldn't make it up.

22.47 to Eastbourne from Vic cancelled tonight. 22.50 to Brighton had 4 coaches - there were another 4 empty on the platform we had to walk past of course before we just about squeezed on. Obviously beyond the ****wittery of SASTA management to realise cancelling one train south would massively overfill the next one out. Feel sorry for those left on the platform unable to get on.

After reading the Southern Twitter account tonight it looks like Southern are reaching new lows in customer service. Seems like cancelling the last timetabled train home is the new idea. Loads of customers now stranded all over the network tonight.

Tonight was an absolute joke as usual - 22:20 Seaford - Brighton cancelled, next Brighton train out of Seaford was the 22:57 which was first off reported delayed, until this turned into cancelled when it was obviously not going to show. Trains from Lewes to Eastbourne and Hastings also cancelled and woe betide anyone with a bicycle because any replacement buses won't take them due to health and safety.

Mainly because it is the norm now, will probably get people reacting if a day went with no issues!

For me, massively packed train this morning to Brighton which I paid to stand ( always very busy ) and then coming back cancelled trains towards Eastbourne and having to change at Lewes to more cancelled trains

However lets all cheer at them winning awards today at the Railway Innovation Awards including the prize for Passenger Experience!!!

They also won the award for its approach to the environment, presumably the innovative approach is to run no trains at all and then you don't damage the environment

http://www.juicebrighton.com/news/brighton-news/2025792/southern-win-award-for-passenger-experience/

"Meanwhile GTR won an award for its approach to the environment. Its One Planet Living - Towards a One Planet Railway project has improved recycling rates across the network". I assume this is recycling the same old lies to passengers in which case we can all agree that they are truly deserving of this award.
