I wouldn't have thought that Sainsbury's would bankroll the whole project though, the value of Roots Hall surely isn't the same as the cost of building the new stadium? I guess your 20k capacity stadium would cost somewhere between £20 and £50 million, assuming that you build it to a low spec.

The original delay was caused by the recession - Ron Martin originally planned to finance the development with (for the most part) bank loans. According to him, he had the "fundamental blocks" for financing in place - then the credit crunch hit, and the banks withdrew their support.

Since then he's been working to find other methods to finance the project, and Sainsbury's appear to be the solution; financing the majority of the project in return for the Roots Hall land.

Apparently the latest delay is due to a number of nearby shopkeepers playing hard ball - the club need to purchase the small parade of shops that meet Victoria Avenue in order to build an access road to the new Sainsbury's supermarket. Without this land, the project is dead in the water...

Re: the club's finances - according to Martin, the Stadium and Club finances are completely unrelated, so even though we haven't got a pot to piss in, this shouldn't affect the stadium development. Though fans are *very* sceptical about that one as we've clearly been operating on a very tight budget and have been forced to sell off our prize assets (Barnard and Clarke) to stay afloat. Unfortunately it seems that'll be the case until we move to FF.

So as you can see, there are a LOT of ifs and buts. And if this project ever happens it'll be a bloody miracle. I'm not holding my breath though.

Did i read right somewhere your chairman has allowed a 3 million budget for the playing side?
Has he taken into account the possibility of relegation? Has he made any plans for this ie cost cuts? team trimming etc?
What impact will relegation have on Southend regarding the ground?

Sounds very messy mate with court dates and players not getting a pay cheque for a few months.
This is not good for attracting new players in the summer is it or hanging on to your better players.

That's correct, though whether the £3m is for wages, transfer fees or a combination of both is open to interpretation.

And according to Martin, the stadium will happen regardless of which divison we're in.

Speaking as one who lives within a decent walk of Roots Hall I cant see why Sainsburys are so keen on the yard! there is a Sainburys near to Southend Victoria now and its usually empty now.

It is equivalent to building a massive Superstore on Lewes Road or some equally depressing dump of an area.

Now a f*** off big Lidl or Aldi...that would be highly appropriate.

Is it anywhere near a station, considering how close Roots Hall is to Prittlewell? I can't think how clubs - Wycombe, Yeovil, etc, have managed to get away with stadia nowhere near stations, considering the hoops we have had to go through.

Actually the 'nucleus' part of the stadium doesn't look too bad, but seriously, did it not even pass through the mind of the designer that everyones going to laugh at southend because their stadium looks like a gigantic reproductive cell?
