Songs That Bring a Tear to Your Eye (for all the right reasons)

Eels have a beautiful way with melancholy and E has such a wonderful voice. Sitting here looking through old photos and stuff with a nice glass of red in my hand, they can bring a teeny tear to the eye.

'Things The Grandchildren Should Know' in particular is a thing of beauty.

'Railroad Man' gives it a run for its money though.

And how about a bit of Johnny Cash recorded shortly before he shuffled off this mortal coil...

Great great songs. Anyone else, or do I just need to 'man up' a tad? ;o)

Love the Eels. It's a Mother****er does it for me. Harsh title but really sad.

First time I heard Wires by Athlete I welled up a bit and I don't even have kids.

Longer - Dan Fogelburg, for the Mrs.
Runaway Train - Soul Asylum.
Hate Me Today - Blue October.
Aubrey - David Gates.
She's Leaving Home - The Beatles.

It's A Hard Life (Wherever You Go) - Nanci Griffith

...And from a very recent album ("Still Fighting The War") by Slaid Cleaves - "Gone". Another track on the album - "Texas Love Song" makes me laugh.

Decades by Joy Division and the ghostly Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil, the latter every time without fail, in fact I usually have to turn it off before it ends.....

Completely agree re the Eels. He manages to craft beautiful songs from very raw emotions. A personal favourite is 3 speed which is such a tender recounting of his early life with his sister and the loss he now feels just bleeds out of every line and chord.

Lot of love for Eels. Climbing To The Moon is the one song that does it for me from E's back catalogue.

Others include:
Elliott Smith - Twilight
Elbow - Scattered Black & Whites
Elbow - An Imagined Affair
Death Cab For Cutie - Passenger Seat
Athlete - Chances
