Son is going to work in Ireland for a month and phone calls from there are very expensive so he wants to talk to his partner via MSN.

I have an old Toshiba Satelite Laptop that he could use but it doesnt have wireless or USB port connections or cd drive. Could he get wireless installed and also is there a lead/ adaptor that can be attached to the computer that would give a USB port. He wants the laptop to use only for MSN and or internet to read NSC when away.

He hasn't a chance in hell of adding a USB port.

He could add a wireless PCMCIA card ( assuming there is a PCMCIA slot ) BUT he would have to get the drivers copied to floppy disk as he has no CD drive and no way of attaching a USB one.

To be honest he'd probably be better off spend £150 on Ebay getting a reasonable spec second hand laptop.

It has a PCMCIA slot as I used to use the laptop but that then goes direct to a telephone line. I have the modem, could I copy it to however many 3.5 floppys and would it then be able to be used with WI FI or would it then have to have something else installed.

PCMCIA -> USB card:
Nisis PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics Photo

With that, he could get a USB Wireless adaptor:
Edimax EW-7318USG Wireless USB LAN Adapter 4dBi: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics Photo

About £20 in total. I've not researched those brands or anything, but it's easy enough to find the equipment necessary. Or if the laptop has an ethernet port in the back, he could find somewhere with a wired broadband internet connection. Or just use a modem like the old days!

(afterthough - the drivers would still be a problem! IF the usb pcmcia card didn't need drivers, then potentially you could copy them onto a USB memory stick and use that as a drive to install the wireless!)

What do you need USB for?

If you just need wireless, just buy one of these PCMCIA Wireless cards:
Wireless - Adapters - PC Cards - Ebuyer

Obviously he'll need a wireless network to connect to.

Many thanks for that I have found 1 on the Maplin website which he can pick up from their store in Tunbridge Wells.

Without wishing to sound thick does this card get recognised by the laptop or would it come with a driver cd, in which case I would need to copy the cd onto floppys for him, if it possible.

If you can get it online via the modem (try using a trial AOL package remembering to cancel the direct debit !!!) then you could easily download any drivers you need. You should also consider Skype. PM if you need any help.

Please help this 'old duffer' again !!!

I have tried to copy a cd and it says cannot be copied as it is is a Read only CD. How do I remove this, I have done it in the past but cannot remember where to find the box to click on to remove the read only feature. Many thanks

Did you manage to sort this out Brian (BensGrandad) ?

You don't say whether this "read-only" is referring to the one you are trying to copy or what you are trying to copy onto?
