I’ve always thought the term ladies and gentleman rather old fashioned, and for a person to use it professionally and not be aware of this and how the world has changed seems at best ignorant and worse case provocative. Seems a lot of people have to hang on to the past and keep entrenched views.
Substituting ‘everyone’ for ladies and gentleman is not a big deal. Sticking up for the use of this when understanding how it can offend betrays the mindset of that person.

perhaps people need to state in their wills how they wish the crowd to be addressed at their funeral ....?? y'know so as not to cause offence to anyone like. The celebrant would start the service not by welcoming the crowd but reading the wishes of the departed as to the welcoming part of the ceremony , the proposed welcome would be hypothetically aired giving anyone who may be offended by the proposed welcome the opportunity to leave the room , thus alleviating the situation to arise where somebody or persons may find themselves offended or , in acute cases, outraged.

Neither is banging on about this stuff being 'woke' 'bullshit' etc etc etc.

To me these are the extremes of a pretty simple discussion.

Are you prepared to make a few changes to your language and behaviour to make some people feel less marginalised?

Some people are not going to be okay with this. I would suggest that most are. Many that are, are going to need some time to make the necessary adjustment. It may be clumsy for a while and we will certainly make mistakes but bear with us we will get there.

The fact that the individual approached the celebrant after the service sounds fairly reasonable to me. Assuming they did it respectfully and with kindness, I don't see the issue.

The other extreme banging on about this being 'woke' etc have their own motivations for this but I can't help feel that these kinds of labels give them an all encompassing buzz word that means that they don't really have to think about individual issues.

I guess the extreme opinions on either side will continue sniping at each other while the rest of us in the middle just get on with things and try to make the world better for each other.
