I don't think would call that a "nice piece" at all.

A very disappointing article that seems happy to say "look at that company there what they did" and let's throw in as bit of political stuff (arms) to justify the deafening silence so far from mega rich footballers.

Like almost everyone on here, I like El Presidente and usually his articles on football finance. Either he has been mis-reported or he got the mood of people wrong with this one.

I tend to agree although I think what he's done is highlight that many players genuinely do act with humility, and he's right to do that.

What has been a huge own-goal is the appallingly slow speed the PFA has acted on this. It isn't a good look seeing mega rich football clubs furloughing their low paid workers while nothing has happened to their players. The PFA should have been ahead of the curve and announced a self imposed pay cut across all members, and they should have done that a week ago. That's where my disdain is aimed at anyway. More than at the clubs themselves.

As it stands there is a reasonably high chance that the season will not finish.
If so I believe Sky and other broadcasters can claw back some of their spend.
I assume this could also include final table prize money.

In any other industry, the threat of this level of single year losses would expedite a huge amount of cost cutting.
Furloughing low paid wage earners isn't going to be anywhere near enough in the case of most Prem Football clubs.

Whilst I agree with @statbrother that football players shouldn't be held accountable for the world's financial injustices.
Taking a 5%(guessing) hit on their wages, to keep their supporting colleagues employed, is a bit of a no-brainer isn't it?

Can you imagine a post-crisis scenario when the club can play home fixtures but with a reduced attendance, say a quarter at around 7,500, how would they do this?

OK - prepare for bit of a rant.

I think the way SOME clubs - and pretty much all of the (PL) players have behaved has been pretty disgraceful - and El Pres seems IMO to be massively missing the point in the article in the Argus.

Hundreds of people are dying every day, and yet he states “Nobody is denying that footballers earn good money but to say that the football industry operates in a moral vacuum?" - Yes - yes it does.

He goes on to say “They do an awful lot which doesn’t get appreciated because it doesn’t make the news.” - well I for one want to see ALL the PL players take (a minimum) of an 70% pay cut (a la Barcelona) and then publicise this. The money can go to the non-match day staff - and any excess (and there would be plenty) can go to Charitable organisations who are trying to help vulnerable people in these difficult times.

Of course they are individual players that are doing great things (Zaha for example) but the PFA need to TELL their members that in these unprecedented times, the player HAVE to be seen to make sacrifices. Unfortunately all the time Gordon Taylor is around I doubt that is going to happen.

How - just HOW can the PL players justify being paid hundreds of thousands of pounds a WEEK when the Country is seeing times the like of which we have never seen before and hundreds of thousands of people are losing their incomes?

The Albion, as a club, as would be expected with Bloom at the helm have acted impeccably - now it's time for the players to stand up and show they give a ****
