Yes, MLS kicks off again tonight. Who are you ROOTING for?

 :drama:

Here's the runners and riders:

Real Salt Lake
Last year's surprise winners, beating LA Galaxy in front of 46,000 in Seattle. Interest is running high in Utah, seeing as their bsketball team (the Jazz) is permanently shit. 8,000 season ticket holders should ensure a decent atmosphere at their pretty and new Rio Tinto Stadium.

Seattle Sounders
Expansion team last year, and Freddie Ljungburg plays for them, they have 32,000 season ticket holders and are expected to sell out their 36,000 seats for every game this year. They open the season tonight, playing this years expansion team Philadelphia Union

LA Galaxy
Along with Seattle, the glamour team of the league. Managed by Bruce Arena, they've have a few "household" names playing for them, including Beckham, Donavan and that ex Everton Portugese bloke who looks like Chewbacca. Oh and ex Albion tosser, Chris Birchall. Will fill their 27,000 stadium most weekends.

Chivas
Squatters at LA Galaxy's home ground and they have a very Mexican-American fanbase. Looking stronger than in the past, though.

San Jose Earthquakes
Play in a temporary high school venue until their new 16,000 all seat is built. Darren Huckerby has recently made a name for himself there.

Kansas City Wizards
Temporarily in a crap baeball stadium until next year when they move to a new 18,000 seater stadium. They're not as shit as San Jose though.

FC Dallas
Expect them to be wank. And despite a new stadium, they draw flies.

Houston Dynamo
Fairly big club in Texas and another team just dotting the 'i's and crossing the 't's on a new stadium deal. Play in a 30,000 seater which fills up for play off matches, but more often than not has about 20,000 for the Dynamo. Dynamo are a decent side who have won it twice since moving from San Jose in 2006.

Colarado Rapids
Not expected to do much in Denver this year. Interestingly, they've just ripped the seats out behind the goal and put a terrace in it's place in time for this season. Jammy bastards. I want one.

New York Red Bulls
My team, former team of Hull's Jose Altidore, and in the past, the resting home for several tired players on their last legs like Jourkaeff and Mattheus. Recently, home to Juan Pablo Angel and with Thierry Henry expected to join after the WC. Brand new cathedral of soccerball opened up last week, and with a good team, 9,000 season ticket holders and that amazing stadium, expectations are high.

New England Revs
They've been good in the past, but suffer from playing in a cavernous NFL stadium. Could be one to watch.

Philly Union
This year's expansion franchise. 10,000 season ticket holders show there is a buzz in Philly for this team. Don't expect them to pull up any trees.

Toronto FC
Just expanded BMO Field by a 1,500 or so, taking capacity to around 22,000. However, this is woefully inadequate for a team with 16,000 season ticket holders and a waiting list of 12,000. Not that their team deserves the sort of fervent support they enjoy. They've been shithouse for their 3 year existence. Danny Dicho scored their first ever goal - in the 21st minute of their THIRD game at the stadium. They are that shit. Last year, a win at a shockingly crap NY side would have sent them to the playoffs. They lost 5-0.

Columbus Crew
An Eastern powerhouse on the field in recent years. They have some passionate fans, but not all that many of them. About 15,000 I think. Their fans like to think of themselves as the Millwall of the USA. Clearly they don't know what the f*** they're talking about. Afterall, nothing screams "hooligans" more than matching t-shirts in a designated rowdy area.

DC United
Once the darlings of the league, now a pale shadow of that. Still a biggish club and they do have proper support, but have been overtaken by other new clubs and have been hampered by politics in getting a stadium sorted. RFK is falling apart.

Chicago Fire
Big Polish and hispanic support, another proper football club. Unluckly not to make it to the MLS Cup final last year. Probably won't be all that this year after Cuauhtemoc Blanco left to return to Mexico in time for the World Cup. He hasn't been properly replaced.

Great preview, Simster.

I'm rooting for Seattle because they've got a player called VAGENAS.

Waiting for the Portland Timbers to join next year!
Their stadium is being rebuilt as we speak and they're another team (playing in USL) that have a fairly substantial fanbase. Seattle played Portland in a pre-season friendly last week in front of 18,600.

And have you seen Vancouver's new gaff for when they join? They're spending millions on a 28,000 temporary venue and then £275m on BC Place.

Soccerball will be a proper major league sport in the Pacific North West in a year or two when Portland and Vancouver join Seattle. And when Montreal join in 2012, it will be fair to say that around 14 of the 19 or 20 teams wouldn't look that far out of place in the Premiership.

Fantastic preview Simster, great reading.

So I can expect my hometown team Toronto to be as shit as ever then?

:annoyed:

Back in the 80's when american football was first broadcast over here a group of us all picked a team to follow. I knew absolutely sod all about the game but picked Chicago Bears becaue they had a player called The Fridge. They slaughtered everyone and won the superbowl.

So, knowing nothing about the MLS, I shall follow that on and therefore, I shall mostly be rooting for Chicago Fire

Yes Crodo, I'm afraid so. First up is Columbus for your boys. Columbus absolutely OWN Toronto. Think Albion at Orient in the 90s - taking loads away and getting SPANKED. That's Toronto at Columbus. They've taken as many as 2,000 to Ohio in the past, and always returned with no points.

I remember those days. Da Bears became this country's team in the era of THE FRIDGE. Anyway, the Fire you say? You'll be wanting this then: Section 8 Chicago

Seattle. Several reasons, firstly I've been there for a holiday and apart from transitory visits I haven't been to any of the other cities. Secondly Wardy played for them! Ok, he didn't actually play for the current incarnation but the 1970s version. Which leads me on to the third reason I'm supporting them: they kept the original name. When the new Seattle club was set up they considered having all sorts of new names to give them a 'fresh new start', but to their credit they decided to go with 'Sounders' as it was the traditional name of the Seattle football team. And that's the fourth reason: they call themselves a 'football team', their name is Seattle Sounders FC - no mention of the word 'soccer'!

Yes PGE Park should be up and running fully for next season. The Timbers fans are nuts too, the games against Seattle, Vancouver and LA should be really feisty next season. All will be considered derby games despite the distances involved.

My aunt lives there so hoping to fit a game in next season if it's possible to get a ticket, although I imagine it could be a season ticket sellout. At last some competition for the underperforming Trailblazers in the city.

To be honest I'm slightly underwhelmed by the new Vancouver stadium but I didn't realise they were eventually moving to BC Place, that will be superb.

Whats with the expansion franchises? Is the MLS actually adding extra teams or are they replacing previous clubs that went bust?

MLS is well past the stage of having to contract.

2009 - expanded to Seattle
2010 - expanded to Philly
2011 - Portland and Vancouver
2012 - almost certainly Montreal (not 100% official yet)
And one other expansion is likely to bring the total number to 20. Probably in St Louis, a second team in New York (Queens?) or maybe Las Vegas - but it's largely dependent on sweet stadium deals, ideally in a downtown location.

When Toronto joined in 2007, the expansion fee was $10m. It's now $40m and expected to rise after Montreal.

Soccerball could quite possibly reach tipping point in North America by the end of the decade.

Revs. Local -- 165 miles, but in the States that is local -- and the (in)direct successors to the Boston Beacons, whom I saw play footy in Fenway Park as a lad in 1968.

And #2 keeper rejoices in the name Preston Burpo.

hasn't becks got it written into his contract that he can "have a team" when he retires?

Went to the new stadium last Saturday to see them beat Santos FC 3-1. Very impressive stadium - much better than watching them play at Giants Stadium where they always looked a little bit lost. The stadium is right next to the mainline PATH station which makes it only about 20 minutes from downtown Manhattan. They looked a lot better than a team that finished last in MLS last season. It's high time New York had a proper soccerball stadium - even if it is in New Jersey ! Best bit - it was only $25 for the Santos game and Chicago Fire.
