yeah it was bollocks- i had the day all planned out- a nice pub lunch at The Sportsman in plenty of time to see the legends..
In the end we ended up walking when we were told there were no busses- rushed a pretty poor lunch and missed the start of all .the fun..

What amazed me was that - at Mithras House at least - no-one seemed to be at all bothered.
Being the sort of person who IS bothered when transport fails to work properly, at 12.53pm (see what I mean?), I discovered that no-one had even contacted the stewards. Possessing a mobile phone with the right numbers, I leapt into action and phoned up some VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE. Richard Hebberd was on holiday and I left a message on his voice mail. He phoned back a couple of minutes later. Martin Perry answered his phone. Neither of them were aware that there was a problem. Both set to work sorting it out and both got back to me to say that the bus company were "blaming traffic congestion".
About ten minutes later a B&H bus turned up (I think from the Lewes Road depot, because the driver had obviously not been briefed on how the P&R service worked). And off went the first load of passengers.
All the signs are that it was the fault of the bus company. They had been told that the first departures were required at 12.30. But they simply failed to get the buses to either site on time.
I'm still amazed at how calmly people take things when they go wrong.

We did think of phoning the stadium and getting the legends to travel down to Mithras House in the Reading team coach. With a few cars moved out of the way, there would have been plenty of room to stage the game in the car park. I would have been quite happy to give up my jumper for one of the goalposts.Thank God for Lord B saving the day

I gave up waiting at Mill Road and jogged down to the ground - only took 6 mins - i was pretty pleased with that !

On a serious note Lord B says he was amazed at how patient folk were at Mithras House. I watched the blessed Lord B make his phone calls and I thank him for that. However I gather at Mill Road it was not all sweetness and light as the first bus arrived it picked up from the back of the queue. There were angry scenes.
Surely the club should have checked with the bus companies yesterday or today to remind them of the early kick off.

Won't cost you nothing. Or failing that, get back in your car and park in any of a hundred or so restriction-free wide roads in Preston Park. Loads of space for everybody round these parts

The bus driver from eastbourne, who supply a num,ber of P&R buses is an albion fan. He told me that he spoke to his bosses on saturday morning and asked about times and was told that brighton and hove bus co had said that it was the same as normal. he questioned it again re the legends match and the same answer came back from B&H Bus Co.

Quite correct although I doubt that many of the old folk or the parents with young kids would think that walking from Mithras House to Withdean was feasible. Mill Road is an easier walk.
My point really was what a shame a lot of folk missed the start of the celebrity match and it really should not have been so. They got to the P & R sites early expecting a service for which they had paid for.
In the great scheme of things no big deal but the club and bus companies should have done better

all very well but I would have a clue how to get to the ground by foot or public transport from Mithras House

For future reference...
Any bus towards Brighton (routes 24, 25, 25C, 49, 49A). Then change at St Peter's Church on to a 5 or 5A going out of Brighton.
There are 18 buses an hour running on Saturday afternoons from Mithras House towards Brighton, and 6 buses an hour leaving St Peter's Church for Withdean. The travel voucher that comes with the match ticket gives you free travel.

That is quite right but the journey into town, with Lewes R roadworks and Union road congestion, not to mention waiting for the change of bus and London rd traffic, would take considerably longer than waiting for a P&R to turn up.
Bring back paddy from B&H to sort out the P&R. Actually, bring back my bro too, who was a bus driver on Eastbourne buses. Mind you, we still have Stormin' Norman.
