Im sure that Capello will leave after the World Cup regardless (unless by some chance we make the semis but even then im not sure)

Ive followed England since 1978 and when Capello was appointed I felt that it was the best opportunity for a generation. A manager with a title at 4 major European sides and THAT Milan team.

Capello has never been frightened to upset players which would have been interesting had Ferguson actually left United because It was likely that Capello would have been next in line.

Ive always followed European Football closely and when people said 'Capello who?' I always said I felt that there was no appointment better (I maintain Moriniho would have been a disaster) and I still stand by that.

The qualifying campaign (and Croatia, Ukraine and even Belarus are no push overs) was the best I can remember. I cant think of anyone who could have done it better. I remember the boos after the Andorra away game and people's inability to recognise how Englands shape was changing. I thought the Croatia away game was a bit too soon but thankfully not.

The players have lost this tournament for us, not Capello. And if he goes weve lost the best managerial appointment in this era.

To put it in summary one pundit said 'Roy Hodgson has experience of smaller clubs on narrow budgets not star studded teams'

There is the problem.... the fact that these players are 'stars' should matter not. But it does.

yes. ive realised it seems like a lament from me. maybe im just protecting myself from high expectations.
international football is different indeed. i just feel after the turnaround in qualifiers that perhaps there is no one who could do better.

But who could do better? People moaned at Sven, even though he reached three successive QFs (better than any other England manager since Ramsay) and only lost three competitive games in six years. But his relaxing style, WAGS and all, wasn't enough. We then had matey old McClaren, who wanted to be one of the lads and was a disaster. And now people say Capello's too rigid and too much of a taskmasker - although he's still not been a failure, yet.

As a team, England, on foreign soil, have just one semi final in all those years of WC and EC football, We've never been ranked higher than four since FIFA introduced our ranking.

If you ask me, the demands are just ludicrous, we haven't got a team of world-beaters and a manager who only works with the players for a few weeks a year can't be expected to work miracles.

We're currently rated 8th in the world: our target therefore is the QF. If we do better, then great, but if we go out in the quarters than Capello hasn't failed. I don't think we will go out before that and I still think we'll make the semis but we do need to get a grip on reality.

agree with most of that, Gwylan. We are consistantly a top 10 nation, so should and do regulalrly get to he quaters in World and Europen cups. but thats not enough for the media, and to be fair there's nothing wrong with dreaming of another final. we should, in europe at least be make the semis more often. we have alot of very good players and it does defy reason they they consistantly dont perform on the top stage - but then neither have Spain or Holland for decades. we dont have the disiplined technical gme of the Italians and Germans, but then we'd all probably go home if we saw that each week (and was the reason people didnt care for Sven).

who could do better? well thats not really the point of the thread, is it? but if you ask, the obvious choice on track record at the time was probably Hiddink. for right now im content to see how Capello handles this next game before judgment, this is were we see how good he is, on the basis of how he turns this team around for the next 1 to 4 games.

I was asking who could do better rhetorically really. The point I was making was that even when we had someone, Sven, who made England punch their weight in tournaments, we moaned about him.

Hiddink is an interesting choice though. But didn't he apply at the same time as Steve McClaren and not get an interview. The FA opted for the fake Dutchman instead of the real one, much to England's loss.

And noted Gwylan. I have been feeling miserable myself - but on the day of the match hope and expectation have returned.

It is a rare tournament that we have not spent the last game looking at permutations of results. We used to say "with our slide-rule" - though I guess that phrase means less these days.

We have been here before - win today, win the next game, then Uruguay or Mexico - and we are in the semi-finals. And then it is all up for grabs.
