9 darter.

For many of the shots in a 147 (the reds, obviously) you have a fair amount of choice of shot, up to 15 different options. There is not so much choice building up to a 9 dart leg...

The 9-darter, you only have to look at the stats. There have been many more 147s in snooker competition than 9-darters. At the Crucible there were two in a couple of days last year. Tells you everything you need to know.

A 9 darter takes just 9 shots, a 147 takes 36 shots.

Apparently, In Fridays Star, it said that there are 4,944 combinations of how to complete a 9 dart game, so i would contest the claim that there is little choice in a 9 darter.

There are 1307674368000 combinations of how to complete a 147. As in 1307674368000 different orders to pot 15 reds in.

I think in comparison there is little choice...

Snooker players tend to be professionals, whereas top darters players arn't. - could explain why

it is only recently that the number of 147's have increased in competitions, and how do we know if 9 darters are made regularly outside of competition in practice? - could be common for all we know.

but are the trebles needed in darts grouped in such a way that you have to actually manipulatre their position to actually make it at all possible?

Snooker reds start together and rely on the players moving them into a better position while still playing the scoring shot, alot harder imo than hitting a stationary target.

A 9 darter can be completed without having to hit the same treble in each 3 dart visit, so therefore there isn't the same hazards that can prevent success. therefore more likely to be completed successfully imo.

Whereas a 9 dart finish is a far more repetitive and so can be practised more. Still a glorious sight.

In theory, you could hit a nine dart finish blindfolded as the board and target never move, there is absolutely no way a 147 could be made blindfolded.

Ask the Dart champs: 9 dart finish! - AOL Video

interesting

especially Taylors claim he hits a 9 darter every other day!!!

Alot of the top professional snooker players have never made a 147

in practice snooker players make them fairly often...

ding junhui claims to have made over 100 147s in practice and hes only 22 or something...

but i still say 147 is harder in my opinion

Yeah..do it blind folded ,thats why Phil Taylor's never managed one in the world championship.

If I had six months to practise and practise at each sport I would feel more confident that I would be able to get a nine-dart finish than a 147.

But could that not just be down to the fact that Snooker players are generally of a higher standard than darts players. You have to hit 36 good shots in Snooker compared with 9 good throws in darts.

147 definitely (I think)
I reckon a decent county player could get a 9 dart check out with a bit of luck you could almost fluke it (not saying its easy) theres not many county snooker players who could grab a 147

Eh? What do you mean 'of a higher standard'? They're all professionals, just some (like Ronnie, or Phil Taylor) are better than others. There are plenty of snooker pros down the rankings who have second jobs, like darts players.

And the fact that it's only nine throws is totally irrelevant, it is the difficulty of the act under pressure in competiton that counts (again, totally different from practice).

For example, snooker players would I'm guessing pot at least 9 out of 10 blacks from the spot, it is normally an easy shot and many of the reds would normally be straightforward. The single act of hitting the treble 20 is harder than MOST (not all) balls you'd pot in a 147. So saying it is 9 throws against 36 pots is far too simplistic.
