Snobbish

Am I being slightly snobbish in a football sense by thinking the only way to get promotion is by topping the table?

Don't get me wrong, a play-off final win would be ace but surely it doesn't compare to a championship!!!

Well, slightly misplaced optimism is better than than the slit-your-wrists our-season-is-over pessimism of six weeks ago on NSC.

I don't like playoffs either.

Top two should go up. I know this would probably scupper our chances but at the least it would be the most consistent teams who were promoted.
If I was in 3rd place I would feel gutted if the 6th place club went up simply on a knockout.

So our season would have been over about a month ago :(

The fact that it's not is what makes playoffs a good idea, and is keeping alive the hopes of 7 or 8 teams

Yes & no because the higher the place in the division the more money you get.

And that would keep your (and the team's) interest like the chance of going up through the playoffs does? :nono:

The fact is the play-offs have been going for about 10-15 years now so the system must work. Every team knows the score, its not like its handed out as a suprise im April! I would like to see an alteration to the system though. 3rd and 4th play off for the right to play 3rd bottom team in the league above-like they did before to see if that team is relegated or not. I cant wait for the play-offs. If we finish 3rd and dont go up it wont make any difference to me than if we finish 6th. Or if we do go up.
We're going to make the play-offs this year and its going to be bloody good fun!

My interest wouldn't wane as I was used to it before the playoffs. The team would play for pride eg. like wanting to beat Cheaterfield simply for who they are.

I don't watch a game because I think the team will get promoted, I watch a game because I want to go.
The thousands who watch their team who are already in 12th place, for instance, will still go regardless.

I don't like playoffs. I will be there cheering the team regardless but I still don't like it.

The playoffs should be organised like the rugby superleague playoffs, so that the higher up you go, the greater the advantage. It may be slightly complicated but at the end of the day, you're better off finishing 3rd than 4th and so on.

If they were to change, this is what I would do:

5th v 6th.

Winner plays team who finished 4th.

Winner of that plays team who finished 3rd.

Winner of that is promoted.

All a series of one-off games and could be done on roughly the same time scale as currently exists.

The play-off's is an inspired idea... it definitely keeps more teams going until the end of the season, maintains the excitement... yes, I would love for us to be Champions again, but not likely is it...

When we beat Millwall in the semi in 91 (both legs), they were two of the most enjoyable games I have watched in over 25 years of supporting the mighty Seagulls (plus we qualified through a very late Deano wonder goal at the Goldstone RIP)... OK, we blew the final that time (Tommy Johnson = tosser), but who's to say we won't finish in the play-ff zone, qualify for the final, and win it this time... surely, the ant-playoff mob can see this would be exciting!... and much more exciting than finishing, say, 6th, and that's it!!...

It is still mathematically possible if we win every match and others lose some of theirs and with the wind behind us. :D
