Smoochy Slow Dance records at the end of the night...

I can't honestly remember - perhaps "Hey There Lonely Girl" (Stylistics?)

Was BOUND to have been a Stylistics record. They were always the last record of the night at school discos, before the lights were cruelly turned on leaving you hot, sweaty and blinking in an unattractive manner as you peeled yourself off your victim....I mean partner.

It was probably Can't Give you Anything (But My Love) or You Make me Feel Brand New or Let's Put It All Together or I'm Stone In Love With You or Betcha By Golly Wow.

The best and most memorable HAS to be "Will You" by Hazel O'Connor.

"....And then we touch, much too much
This moment has been waiting for a long, long time
It makes me shiver, makes me quiver
This moment I'm so unsure
This moment I've waited for
Is it something you've been waiting for
Waiting for too?

Take off your eyes
Bare your soul
Gather me to you and make me whole
Tell me a secret
Sing me the song
Sing it to me
In the silent dark
Well, it's getting kind of late now
I wonder if you'll stay now, stay now, stay now, stay now
Or will you just politely say goodnight?"

Every Hockey, Baseball or Soccer dance I went to in Ajax, Pickering or Oshawa, Ontario ended with Behind Closed Doors by Charlie Rich.

Cringeingly bad but every time I hear it I get homesick for Canada.

Nowhere even close to slow, speed wise, as thats not the kind of music played here, but I think it would have been Children by Robert Miles.

Not the best track to snog to, but it was the last track being played.

I can't remember the first (I suspect it was the Stylistics) but the one I remember most fondly was the one played at a reggae club in Bradford. For several months in 1981, the last song they played was always Barbara Jones's version of Randy Van Warmer's Just when I needed you most. (Sigh) brings back poignant memories just thinking about it.

Lush, Will you is a great pop record and one much under-rated.

That's the one that ALWAYS reminds me of the teen/disco Erection section, looking for that one bird who hadn't pulled!!

Eric Clapton's, you look wonderful tonight, I don't know if that's the title. It's a great song that you can shout, sorry, sing the words into your wife's ear while she is trying to stop you falling over from the drink.

I haven't been to a do over here yet where it hasn't been played

What no "Lady in Red" or is that the Large One's "too embarrasing" entry.

The one that I recall, which is also pretty embarrasing now, was by Charlie Rich - The most beautiful girl in the World

Tell her, "I'm sorry."
Tell her, "I need my baby."
Oh.... Won't you tell her that I love her.

I woke up this morning and realized what I had done
I stood alone in the cold gray dawn
I knew I'd lost my morning sun
I lost my head and I said some things
Now come the heartaches that morning brings
I know I'm wrong and I couldn't see
I let my world slip away from me
So.......

Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did, was she crying, crying?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl that walked out on me
Tell her, "I'm sorry."
Tell her, "I need my baby."
Oh.... Won't you tell her that I love her.

I can't remember the first one, even the last is a distant memory!

Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues was always a fave along with Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight,

Lady in red has much better memories for me as I once saw a 'dancer' perform to that at the strip at the ship in the lewes road.

Happy days where you didn't have to pay a tenner for each dance AND you were allowed to touch.

When I was about 11, the ONLY song that was ever played at the end of school discos and the like was Bryan Adams - I Do It For You (from Robin Hood).

Considering the number of horny 11 year olds that wanted to learn how to fire a bow and arrow to impress the girls, I'm amazed that we haven't won a gold medal for archery at this year's Olympics.

BTW my favourite school disco songs at the time were (shamefully) "Walk The Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was) and "Blame It On The Boogie" by the Jacksons. I think I still know all the words and dance moves to both.

Ahh, Whitney!! I forgot about that. Did everyone try and song along to the bit at the end where she sings so loud it sounds like her lungs are going to explode?

As Micky Adams would say, I'm very disappointed that this otherwise-excellent thread has gone on so long without the slightest mention of these songs to which I may have groped after squishy bits to generally no avail in my youth: Crazy For You by Madonna and The Power Of Love by Frankie (not Jennifer Rush or Huey Lewis).
