Does anybody know why we could smoke behind the stands on Saturday? A luxury the police and stewards seemed happy to accommodate. Usually its through the turnstiles and that's it.

Ach. I didn't know that. I'd have butchered a fag.

I'll never understand the rules on all this. Many grounds let you out for a fag, some like Saturday allow to smoke within the stadium (effectively), some non league grounds let you smoke whilst on the terraces, Woking away last year for example. It just doesn't make any sense.

I'm a smoker and I personally cannot stand the smell of fags left behind when someone has a crafty cigarette in the cubicles in the toilets. If the smell makes me feel sick, I can't imagine how non-smokers must find it.

Cigarette areas for all, etc

Agree, as a smoker, smoking on a plane, train and even now a lock in bar seems just wrong. Why I guess most smokers agree to a ban. But by the Wedlock stand you couldn't' have an alcoholic drink at half time but a cigarette. Perverse.

Smoking areas ,inside and out ! Just so long as the two areas dont conflict,ie outside pubs late at night or the summer areas that all enjoy, or am i just living in the past as smoking will fade out and be outlawed !

One of the few perks of the Withdean, having all those burger vans containing those miserable birds that doubled up as somewhere to hide behind at half time and 'get some air'.

As best as I can understand, the law on smoking is based around the building the public use/where people work. There needs to be x percent of wall/roof missing (not including closable doors or windows). Because of the range of designs of football stadia, the FA do not have a set rule on smoking in grounds, allowing clubs to decide their own policies based on how the law applies to their stadium.

Many clubs have decided to just play it safe and go non-smoking.

Regarding the clubs that let fans out and then back in, I have no explanation. I was under the impression it was against FA regulations, but a quick search on the FA website doesn't seem to show anything, but it's not a great search engine.
