Once again, the contrived extremes come out in order to try to prove your point Nibble. I have no experience in dealing with retarded children, so I would not know where to begin when it comes to disciplining a mentally handicapped child. Yuu certainly seem to have all the answers though, from your own extensive experience.

Hilarious that parents have the right to decide what wrrents corporal punishment. A form of punishment that has been banned in every other area of society.

Would you slap a retard if they stepped into the road? They have got to learn haven't they?

While I tend to agree with you about the lack of need to smack children, you keep undermining your own argument with these series of absurd comparisons.

A parent has a duty to socialise their children, and is responsible, (legally), for their behaviour. This is the reason why they are granted the tools, by society, to perform this task.

Conmparing to hitting a girlfriend, bloke in the street, retard, (offensive naming by the way), makes no sense.

You may need to brush up your debating skills if you are going to keep up this level of contentious opinionated argument on NSC.

But extremes seem to illustrate the point quite well. You don't want to listen when I offer up the point that children don't learn from violence. Why can't you explain something to them?

"Oh my child has just run into the road and almost hurt himself very seriously I know just so I make sure he never hurts himself I'll hurt him".

Do you see where the flaw in that is?

Binky, It is an exact comparison if you boil it down to the fundamental fact that you are hitting another human being in order for them to behave in the right way.

Of course not.

I'd be gently pushing you.

That is quite funny. However, I fail to see how everyone on thi sboard can accuse me of being aggressive and at the same time ignore your insults. I think it is maybe because you are telling them what they want to hear where as I like to stick to my own opinions.

But extremes seem to illustrate the point quite well.

It is a technique commonly called "reducto ad absurdum". It is an excellent thinking and philosophical tool, but a very poor debating tool.
Normally when using it as part of a debate, to make a specific point, the debator will signal its use by actually using the "reducto ad absurdum" phrase.

Which applies more to the spoken word as oppose to the written debate.

But that is an entirely different argument, and one which is much more far reaching.

Your position now is that no human being should strike another human being under any circumstances.
Your rationale for this position is that there is no need for it.
Presumably you extend this thinking beyond national boundaries, so there is no need to hit say, an Iraqui, Iranian, Argentinian, or German.

No. What I am saying is that violence as an educational tool is dubious at best.

Sounds like a bit of paranoia there Nibble.

Also changing posters names to insult is a tad immature - and is the type of thing that bullies do. Non-violent ones obviously.

I haven't changed anyones name? I calle dthem Pinky and Perky and that was it.
