Hi All,

I am moving to an area which cannot support Virgin Media, so looking at sky for my TV, for convience i will no doubt look into broadband with Sky as well.

however, I have heard the broadband is pretty shit and relys on how good your telephone line is.

Does anybody have any views on this?

Cheers

I've had absolutely no problems with my Sky BB. My mums has needed a new router, last week though, I don't know what problem she had, she know's nothing technical, so it may have been nothing.

I did have some problems when I was with BT, but nothing too major.

i gave my mates mum a new route the other week....wahey

Joining up so will try and get a decent deal. three of us moving in 2 boys and a girl, we will no doubt be massive geeks and play Fifa online in the same room on different computers.

im guessing this might be a bit of a push.

do NOT get Sky Broadband...utter gash.

I had a 20meg download but never went past 300 kbps.

Also, if you enjoy gaming online, forget it...lag, lag and more lag!

No problem with mine. Only had one or two outages in the last couple of years, and get a pretty constant 5MB download speed.

Works out proper cheap if you get your phone line through them as well. Only downside is you have to use their piece of shit router which you can't configure

Got sky broadband but I'm only 1.4km from the local exchange so it's pretty good. I think all broadband relies on the quality of you phone line and distance to local telephone exchange.

yep, not much you can do about it either. some cases new wiring might help, but cant do nowt if you're a long way from the exchange.

Have you though about BT with BT vision, they do some good all inclusive deals which include ESPN plus can get Sky Sports 1 & 2 for only £18-20 a month & no I don't work for them. Mum has it & gets an excellent service. Would switch to it myself but need a descent aerial reception for TV, which we can't get, too many trees and hills, so have to have Sky.

If you do sign up with Sky, the best deals are online and if you use Top Cash Back you could get up to £146.45 cashback depending on the package that you choose

Sky are awful.
I'm in Hove and the BB is utter utter utter crap. It's dreadfully slow ( between 300k - 1.3 meg download ).
Plus, Sky customer services are nothing but winkers. Unprofessional, arrogant, unhelpful and full of crap. I've caught them out lying on a number of occasions ( mostly when I complain about the BB )
If you can find someone else, please do

Which sky BB package are you going for? Their basic one just uses BT backhaul and is pants but if you go for the top LLU package you should have no issues. I pull 15 meg download and use it for Xbox live with no lag or issues.

In response to your question, your broadband speed is influenced by the distance of your home from the telephone exchange that serves you (longer distance = worse speed), technology used (ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+ or VDSL2), the number of customers sharing common network (mentioned as backhaul elsewhere, but there are other shared network points that also matter) and also the delivery mechanism around the home (wired generally better than wireless).

You get what you pay for really. If you can get BT Infinity, then they use the faster VDSL2 technology as well as the ADSL2/2+ options. Sky and most other ISPs use ADSL2/2+ currently.

If you can get BT Infinity (check below), then you are lucky. I have to wait 4 months in my area until I can get this.

The name gives it away
I'm in Mile Oak, about 2.5 miles from the exchange and get a rock solid 3.8mb from Sky. I know thats not a lot compared to some but its fine for me. I also use it to download their anytime plus programmes without any problem. I've been with them about 3 years now and never had one outage. Compared to BT and Tiscali who I had before its probably twice as good. Its also cheap if you have the phone and Sky TV, only £7.50 per month unlimited and if you have a 2gb cap per month I think its free.

I've got Sky and it's brilliant

Consistently around 5 meg which is absolutely fine for me. Runs SkyGo perfectly well.

The router they give you is shit though. Make sure you ask for an N router, otherwise you may need to use another router as a wireless access point.

Sky Anytime+ is also f***ing brilliant - loads of films and other stuff available.
