I went to Austria, Mayrhofen, last Xmas. There are 3 places to ski from within Mayrhofen and they are all reachable by a free bus from any where in the town. As they are all on different sides of the mountains, if there is an issue, such as we had with high winds and the lifts get shut, you can go onto another place and ski. Eating and drinking is about the same price as here in the UK. There's a great pizza restaraunt where they cook them in an open kitchen that you can see and the large pizza was about £5! I have been to a couple of places in Austria snowboarding and have found that they are not rip-off merchants like in France.

I would not say that Mayrhofen is the best place to learn to ski, so if you have any first timers it may be worth avoiding. Not too long a transfer, 45-60 minutes I think it was. The only issue that I had was massive lift queues, for one day! I went the week before Xmas and my last ski day was the bank holiday after Boxing Day and it was a 15 minute wait on every lift. Every other day there was no queues whatsoever!

What sort of size group are you planning for? Do you have many beginners or are you mainly competent skiers and riders? Self catering or full board ?

Wengen in Switzerland is a great place, if you base yourself in Lauterbrunnen (which is far cheaper) you can then choose to ski either Wengen or Murren or both..!
And all under the the amazing Eiger..

Alpendorf (spelling) in Austria is amazing, i'ts near Saltzburg, and if you don't mind Red Bull being in your face everywhere you go (they pretty much own it all), it's well worth a visit. I was lucky enough to win a trip there through my work, and it rates as one of my best hols ever! Great skiing/boarding, and loads to do for adults and kids alike.

I nearly forgot to add, you can visit the amazing Red Bull Hangar 7 at Saltzburg airport too, i true sight to behold! (If anyone else has been here you'll know what i mean)

I've come back home.
Strongly recommend St Anton in Austria. Great for all levels with loads of different pistes. The care for children and the quality of instruction is second to none, the wide and varied slopes are brilliant. The off piste and black are tough and the blue's are excellent for the beginners. You can also travel by bus further up the valley to try out different areas.

Night life and restaurants are also spot on as well.

And sit on the veranda of the Hotel and visualise your self as Clint in The Eiger Sanction!

Les Menuires is great - nice and high, so skiing is great later in the season than most. It's part of the 3 Valleys - a huge system of runs...supposedly the biggest in the world. Val Thorens is just up the road but Les Menuires is about half the price. I know it's in France, but you can't beat the 3 Valleys.

Okay, good size group. Personally I would always choose France as normally you will get better conditions and the seasons last longer because of this. Italy, Andorra and Austria can be hit or miss but good skiing can still be had. If heading to Austria I would suggest Mayerhofen, this is very popular with Seasonaires for good reason, as it has good terrain and good night life.
If you go for Italy, try and choose one of the resorts in the Dolomites superski region, largest amount of runs in Europe.
This is a website worth looking at Ski deals - cheap ski holidays France - ski packages including lift pass

You might have to organise flights but I know people who have had accommodation and lift passes for about £150 a head for the week.

As I said, I would look investigate France more as their is some stunning skiing to be had!

If your looking outside of France and your looking for a group Skiing holiday I would definately recommend Austria as a destination.
Like others have mentioned allready, Mayrhofen and Kitzbuhel are two of the best resorts for groups to enjoy a ski/board holiday in. Those two resorts have enough piste coverage for a week and a decent amount of runs for mixed abilities. Also both resorts have some awesome Board Parks for the snowboarders in the group.
There will be plenty of Self-Catering Apartments in Mayfhofen and Kitz as well, so accomodation won't be a problem there.
Whatever you do, don't go to Sauze D'Oulx!! Awful Awful place!! Enough said!!
One last point, be careful with the dates you book for Austria, the snow records are pretty poor in January months (I think) on previous years.

Hi , A place deffo worth a visit is Andorra, cheaper off piste than anywhere in Europe... A 2nd place worth consideration is Bulgaria, although the food is somewhat dodgy if you plan to eat out, but very cheap!... Have been to all countries in Europe for ski seasons so have experience... Italy is always a good shout too!

Good luck.. pm me for more info if required.

I have to agree with France, though Austria, Switzerland & Italy are great the French resorts such as the three vallees & Tignes are far more snow sure..
and the best thing about them is there is Ski in & Ski out which is without question the way to go...!!

Bumping this as a few (3-5) of us are looking at a week skiing in Jan (pretty much straight after new year.) we are all novices with only 1 or 2 trips each previously. Where is best to go / quite safe at this time for good snow? Ideally we want cheapish, especially food & drink (no more than UK prices.) Bulgaria looks and sounds good, but more than open to advice from the pros.

Also is it best to do ski hire in UK to ensure you are happy before going? Only ask as know a couple of people that had ruined trips with poor hire kit!

Sorry france again tignes great for all abilities great snow(north facing glacier) can ski over to val disere!
First time skiers don't buy lift pass till you are off the free lifts!(couple of days into hol)
