Interesting debate in the pub last night about going back to old flames years after the relationship has ended.

A mate of mine has found his old girlfriend on myspace and after a bit of chatting they are going out on a date tonight.

I am of the opinion 'never go back' - things never seem to be the same, especially if they ended acrimoniously the first time.

So, what does NSC think - any experiences or advice - Is it ever safe to go back?

in my experience, it can't work. the sex is usually good, because you've known them before, so know what each other likes, plus there's this new electricity between you, but after that is the same old things that piss you off that caused you to dump her in the first place.

There is a saying about not going back to a firework that fails to ignite properly, I would say that relationships are much the same, you might be OK but it could blow up in your face.

Yes. I split with my girlfriend after a couple of years, however after going out with a couple of other girls I met back up with her still felt the attraction so we got back together. Six years later and we've just got married.

Why not?

Clearly it depends on why you split in the first place, what has changed since and whether she's willing to go atm.

I know someone who dated a bloke for a year , didnt work out , seperated for 4 years seeing other people etc. Then bumped into each other and within 3 months was engaged......all seems a bit fake to me but she reckons she is happy.

Personally , I say never go back. OK to end up in bed with them , but as for a relationship , once the initial buzz is out the way the reasons you were incompatable before have a very good chance of clashing again........always seems like accepting 2nd best if you go back

Never say never...but think about why you split up in the first place - was she boring, did she fart in bed, did she laugh like a hyena, did she cheat? Or was it you - did you cheat, did you piss her off with your antics?

Somethings will change in a person but somethings won't......

NO! NO! NO! Have done it three times, and in two cases went back multiple times and the result is I'm married to someone else. The trust is never there second time around and even less after that.

A lot of people split up thinking "the grass is always greener" then, when they find out it isn't, want to get back together.

I split up with a girlfriend in the mid 80's and then got back together with her after a couple of months.

Complete disaster.

We got married six months later and we're still together 20 odd years later.

On a slightly different topic there were a couple of girls that I was too stupid enough to recognise that there was some chemistry between us. Looking back they were putting it on a plate for me.

I'd like to revisit them.

To be fair though, they were stripping for a living in the Balltree Arms in Lancing though at the time in question.
