Nobody is criticising the BBC for highlighting corruption, they are criticising the BBC for their TIMING. I agree, in hindsight the bid was a lost cause months ago, but it is also a fact that more votes were lost by our media. Under the guidance of Blatter, the FIFA delegates are fickle and vindictive.

Would you have wanted someone from the the government or whomever to lean on the BBC to shut them up? That is a very dangerous game.

Would you have been happy then if England won the bid knowing that FIFA was (allegedly) corrupt? We should not stoop to their level to get what we want.

However, in my experience they are not the only people who can be vindictive. Newspaper editors, for example.

I can see in one or two newsrooms a list of the names of Exco members with a target round it. They are fair game now, and every bank statement better be clean, and every penny accounted for, because they are going to be hounded and people are going to be offered a lot of money to bring them down and try and prove this process was corrupt.

Of course not, the BBC cannot be leaned on, they should make their own judgements. Unfortunately this was a bad judgement.

England 2018 bid sunk by media, says Japan's Ogura

Japan's Fifa executive committee member has told the BBC that England's World Cup bid humiliation may have been a result of a backlash against the British media.

Junji Ogura, long considered one of England's closest allies, praised the strength of the England bid and its presentation despite the fact that it crashed out of the voting process in round one, eliminated after picking up only two votes.

"I thought England was a very strong candidate.," said Ogura. "Their presentation was one of the best presentations.

It's totally complicated... nobody will say which country they voted for.

"But I think there was a big influence from the BBC and the Sunday Times. These reports possibly influenced people. It made damage for some people."

If that's really a direct quote from a FIFA delegate, it only goes to show and underline just how arrogant, insular and corrupt they all are.

Two organisations that have nothing to do with the bidding process are being blamed for these delegates not voting for a particular bid; just how stupid do they think people are?

Because it's up to the programmers at the BBC to decide when a programme goes to air, not the government; when that equation changes then we're in a very difficult place morally with respect to freedom of speech. The timing may have been unfortunate, but in a free country the free press can broadcast whenever it suits them

The program was made, so delaying transmission in case it upset the England bid would have been seen as an endorsement of the bidding process itself. Had they shown it afterwards, they would have got grief from some for not showing it beforehand.

I agree. FIFA clearly needs to change, and Blatter to go. If FIFA and the bidding process is not a corrupt organisation, it is certainly set up in such a way that it can encourage corruption. It is certainly not transparent and Blatter appears to have unchallenged power.

But, if you decide to enter a bid you need to play by the known rules if you want win. It shows naivety to loose and then blame the system however corrupt it possibly is.

One thing that occurs to me is the impact all this negative publicity will have on FIFA's ability to generate sponsorship. Surely some companies are going to be a bit wary of putting their name to events organised by a corrupt organisation. For that reason I think it's important that the BBC and ST follow through with their investigations and prove their cases. What would really piss me off would be if they now decided that the vote is over - it's yesterday's news!
