Shots to goals ratio

Some interesting stats from our first 8 league games:

Albion

Shots 140 (on target 38) - Goals 8

Opponents

Shots 70 (on target 24) - Goals 10.

So we've had TWICE as many shots as our opponents, but have scored fewer goals! (1 in 17.5 v 1 in 7). A lower proportion of our shots are on target too (27% v 34%).

It's pretty obvious where the problem lies - if we'd matched our opponents on a shots to goals ratio, we would have double the number of points we have now and be in the play-off places. On a positive note, at least we're creating a lot of chances...

Yeah - and looking at the table tonight when we all thought we'd be scoring more this season, I notice the only sides who have scored fewer than us this season are the 6 sides below us. And I was hoping it would get better................

When was the last time we were banging them in?

Feels like a long time ago.

But what about who had the shots, and where they were from!! It could be that of the 140 shots,100 may have come from(given our style of play) defenders who incidently dont specialise in scoring goals! Also the other 40 could be from 35 yards out or from ridiculous acute angles!

Are we? Or are we showing a lack of discipline and blasting shots from distance that do not, and were never going to, trouble the opposition? Just because we shot doesn't mean we created a chance.

One of those shots might be the (if this includes cup games) JFC taking a shot direct from kick off, gifting the opposition possession. If not, it certainly will have included what were reported to be wasteful shots from Lualua v Ipswich, shooting from distance rather than trying to create a decent chance.

All well and good but where are the shots coming from? Are they stupid angles we have no chance to score from, long hopeful shots etc

You could say the same about the teams we have played. There's enough of a trend here. Even if you just take shots on target, there's a significant difference - 21% have resulted in goals v 42% for our opponents.

Miroslav Klose probably had a similar number of shots per game as Frank Lampard in world cup matches.
