Shark Story - how scary is this?!!

A FISHERMAN came face-to-face with a massive Great White shark after falling from his dinghy in Cockburn Sound early Saturday morning.

The Rockingham man, aged in his 30s, fell into the sea as he tried to defend himself against a 4.5m shark that rammed his small aluminium fishing boat from behind at 7am.

In a terrifying chain of events described by sea rescue volunteers, the man tried to deter the shark from chewing on his outboard motor by hitting it on the nose with an oar.

But the man-eating monster grabbed the oar and as the fisherman attempted to retrieve it, he toppled into the water.

The boat, which the man was preparing to anchor, was still in gear and motored away from him towards shore, preventing him from climbing aboard.:yahoo::bigwave:

The shark circled the man four or five times before he was able to flee. He began a frantic two nautical mile swim to shore and was picked up by a fisherman after half an hour.

Yesterday, Rockingham Sea Rescue volunteers recounted the man's terror at his narrow escape.

``He told us the dorsal fin was about the height of a table and the shark was about 4-5m long,'' said volunteer rescuer Colin Lowson.

``He said when he fell out of the boat, he was face-to-face with the shark. It was that close. All he saw was a mass of white.''

A Police spokesman said: "The man was in the process of anchoring the boat when he heard a noise coming from the boat's motor.

"When he turned around he noticed a shark, described as a 4.5m white pointer, nibbling at the motor."

The incident occurred just a few kilometres from where Port Kennedy man Brian Guest was taken by a 4m-5m white pointer in December 2008.

Mr Guest, 56, was diving for crabs in just a few metres of water when he was taken by a giant shark.

At City Beach early today a PerthNow reader reported seeing a giant dorsal fin, just 25m from the shore.

Matty said: "Went for my morning run at south City Beach, 300m down from the groyne and to my astonishment a dorsal fin the size of a bike wheel was about 25m off of the beach.

"I'm pretty sure it was a great white.''

Great Whites have been spotted off the English coast line for years, there was a programme all about it last year, one was even spotted off the coast of Scotland!!

Our water is too cold for sharks to live in our water for long lengths most of the time, But with global warming affecting Ocean tempratures they may soon be in our waters..

the Whale Shark lives in our waters, plus a few other smaller varietys. Great Whites I think were spotted in late summer when the waters would've been at max temp.

A sea temp rise in our coastal waters of just one degree above its current average would be like ringing the dinner bell for the great white, and this is forecast to happen within the next 3 years. ooo err missus

Really?, not true according to this.

And from Wikipedia
Great white sharks live in almost all coastal and offshore waters which have a water temperature of between 12 °C (54 °F) and 24 °C (75 °F), with greater concentrations off the southern coasts of Australia, off South Africa, California, Mexico's Isla Guadalupe and to a degree in the Central Mediterranean, Adriatic Seas and New Zealand [5], where they are a protected species. One of the densest known populations is found around Dyer Island, South Africa where much research on the shark is conducted. It can be also sometimes found in tropical waters like those of the Caribbean, and has been recorded off Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya and the Seychelles

Whale Sharks definitely don't live in, or would even visit, our waters. They live in much warmer seas. Maybe you're thinking of Basking Sharks.

He fell in and not wanting to look like a right twat as his boat sped away, made up the story about the shark. Very good.

I'm sure The Great Whites are already visiting our shores tbh. They're highly adaptable to a variety of water temperatures (12 - 24 degrees C being their ideal) & the warming of our waters (as has been mentioned) will provide them with the choice of an extended stay. I guess it just depends on whether their diet will be satisfied in the end - but with all those seals (& other fatty-mammals) splashing about our isles, I reckon they'll be suitably impressed with the menu on offer.

I reckon that bloke made that story up, the lying twatwatwat.
Attention seeker, since when did sharks nibble at outboard motors?!
This, he was pissed and fell out the boat I reckon :)

No no no no!
The shark is his friend infact I heard rumours they are more than just friends but anyway they organised this whole thing as a publicity stunt AS LONG as the shark wears PVC next time they do the deed

I was standing on a groyn in Seaford many years ago and this bloody great fin drifted by, followed by a tail fin about 15' behind. It must have been about 6' away from me.
Good job I knew it was a basking shark. Awesome.
